I haven't been on WHT in about 3 months.. been busy with work and all. During that time I have purchased 4 android tables, with another one coming soon.

Can anyone explain to me why you would use one? Doesn't a laptop or desktop suffice? I am not looking to bash, just don't see the appeal.

My mother in law loves her iPad - they're a fun toy and I could see me using one, but not to drop what the iPad costs.

Unfortunately for Android tabs, Android is lacking in the Netflix streaming. You can get an "OK" Android tab for a couple hundred bucks with Wifi I think, which puts it down into the accessible-on-a-whim toy range though.

After the PITA issues with firmware for my Droid X, I'm not sure I'd buy another moto device. If they end up being one of the first platforms to have Netflix streaming, because of the alleged security, I'd change my mind... but for now I'd just rather have an easier time doing custom kernels and that sort of thing.

iPad's are just simple to use, why start up a PC just to check news/eMail

    That's why I use one

Apple dropped the pricing of the old iPads by around AUS$200.00, to AUS$398.00 for the 16GB wifi iPad. The new iPad2 is US$499.00 for the base 16GB wifi version. That's pretty competitively priced.

But I wouldn't call them a toy, but they are a fun way to consume media and play games. It's a fun piece of well built tech that pretty much anyone can use.

I mainly use mine to read through all my various newsfeeds with the Flipboard app. I can spend an hour or so just on Flipboard, as it's like an daily online magazine with custom content that I choose from my interests. I'm also engaged in a Fieldrunners comp with 2 of my sons. That's some good family fun.

The kids are getting my iPad as I upgrade to the new iPad2. Might pick up another new 16GB iPad too, seems they're so cheap, for the kids. The wife wants to get a bunch of education apps. There are some private schools over here where all the kids have iPads. That's probably a bit over the top, but they do have some great educational software available.

I'm just getting the white iPad2 16GB model with wifi, as I have a wifi hotspot on my iPhone4, so need to worry about getting a 3G iPad2 or additional 3G data plan for the iPad2.

Android powered tablets will come into their own with Honeycomb 3.0 OS, as that's a tablet OS and not a phone OS running on a tablet with another UI over it, depending on who the tablet hardware maker is. Then Google are releasing their own tablet with a crome based OS that's been custom built just for tablets, so that would be good no doubt.

Bob: $400 is a bit too much for a toy for me... and for me, personally, a tablet is a toy. I'm never too far away from a PC, and I've always got my phone on me which can do almost all of the things I'd need to do. A tablet (of any variety) really wouldn't allow me to do anything different that I can't already do with the devices I have (the larger screen just might make it a bit easier). If I'm gonna drop $400 on anything, it'll either be a TV, or I'll add a bit more and get a new camera.

As far as Honeycomb goes, I very much doubt Honeycomb will appear on the sub-$200 budget tablets for quite a while, and I don't think Honeycomb implies Netflix streaming.

    Hello,
I personally use the ViewSonic GTablet, and actually like it quite a bit. The key is you MUST root it and replace it with VeganTab or another aftermarket ROM for it to be usable.

Bob, what are the best education apps?

I'm a teacher, and the iPad has intrigued me. That said, I haven't heard of any stellar educational apps, other than potentially The Elements. Am I just not aware of a lot of the iPad educational apps?
