for beginners i will suggest w3schools. They have got great tutorials for the basics and the they have also got a testing module from which you can test your progress. +1 for w3schools.com

+7 on w3schools.com, I use it all the time (for more than just PHP). Also, check out PHP Classes... lots of great stuff for PHP, not limited to tutorials.

W3schools for the basic category, and then tizag.
After that, think up an idea you want to make and then use php.net to find the functions.
