    Single x3460 vs Dual E5410?

Looking to upgrade one of my older Xeon servers to something newer...

Debating between an x3460 Lynnfield and a Dual E5410 Harpertown both w/8GB RAM. I'm running some VoIP applications and MYSQL in the background.

Don't think I will be virtualizing anything...but you never know.

Given the processors and requirements, which one is better suited? E5410 is a tad older, but according to Passmark packs about 10% more punch than the x3460.

    Any opinions are appreciated.

I feel that either solution will work for you. It really depends on the price points and if the value of the 5410's is worth the performance increase. I feel it's a toss up, and that in the end, either solution will be a suitable option.

    Tin,

The E5410 works out to be about $40 cheaper... so I think I will end up going that route.

the dual e5410 will be significantly faster than the single x3460. We have a large number of both in production. It's not *amazingly* faster, but the E5410 can do maybe 25-50% more pageviews / second on a heavily cpu-bound website that we run.

Yes, the Dual E5410 will outperform the Intel Xeon 3460. Intel Xeon 3460 is a very good processor as well, highly recommended.
