    Anyway to verify?

    Heya,

I have a dedicated server on a unmetered 10mbit port.. I'm wondering if there is anyway to tell what kind of bandwidth my server has at anytime.. Basically I am concerned that others are using the 10mbit TOO much, and not giving enough BW to my dedicated server.. I'm unsure how to meter it though.. How can I see what bandwidth I can use? My issue is I attempted to go to my website, and while it did load, it loaded EXTREMELY slow, but 5 minutes later it worked flawlessly, and this often happens. How can I check this? I know it wasnt my side because I could load every other page that wasnt on my server very quickly.

    Thanks,
    Justin

Does your datacenter provide you with MRTG graphs? If so, check those and see what your port usage is like. If they do not, install something like Munin to monitor your port usage on the server.

Download a large file from your server and see what the transfer rate is.

    you can install iptraf:

    yum install iptraf -y

    then do iptraf -d eth0

It will show you the b/w you're using at a given time. It's not totally accurate at really high bandwidth rates (several hundred megabit or more), but it works perfectly fine at the 10 - 100 megabit level.

You might also want to try nload. Remember that a bandwidth graph from your provider is based on 5 minute averages of your data transfer. So to see 10Mbps, you would have to be transferring 10Mbps for 5 minutes. Otherwise you won't see 10Mbps.

    Good luck!
