    thePlanet (SoftLayer) vs. iWeb

    Hi,

I have two dedicated servers: powerful server at Softlayer and budget server at iWeb. I have a growing startup which needs 20Tb traffic per month, and it seems that I need an additional RAM now. However, Softlayer is very expensive at hardware upgrades. Softlayer wants $50/month per 2Gb RAM while iWeb wants only $20. Also my server at Softlayer has a config below:

    2 x Xeon 2.00GHz, 2Gb RAM, 2x250Gb HDD, 10Tb bandwidth. It costs $250 per month.

    iWeb has a special offer:
    2 x Xeon Quad 2.13GHz, 12Gb RAM (!!!), 2x1Tb HDD (!!!), 10Tb bandwidth. cPanel included. Price is $279.

So I'm confused. Maybe it's better to migrate to iWeb? However, I don't know how fast and good it is. Maybe, thePlanet (Softlayer) has better channel/data center, and it's better to stay with Sortlayer? But with additional 2Gb RAM server will cost $300(!!!). It's very expensive for this config.

    Sorry for bad English.

Get with sales at Softlayer, chances are you can get it at around $15/gb which isn't as cheap as $10/gb but Softlayer, imho, is a premium provider so it's worth it.

If I had the choice between the two, I'd personally go with iWeb. Softlayer will need to answer some questions and fix some things before they get back on the good list (See FileVo, SimpleCDN, and others).

I couldn't have said it better. Softlayer is an excellent provider and worth the money & service - haven't used them in many years but reading some of the reviews, things have only gotten better. Location will be a wide open variable here, though.

You guys must be crazy. You're talking like Softlayer has the awesomest network ever - it's not that special. And with the latest developments (see a few posts above) it's even more riskier to stay with Softlayer.

I'd go with the better hardware anyway - what good is fast network when all your websites will be slow to process and serve because that hardware is slow and has little memory?

The faster hardware would counteract the bigger latency to your users (if any) and would also give you the opportunity to expand and improve your site, for example by using memory caching, php accelerators and stuff you wouldn't use with the little memory Softlayer gives you by default and so on

We are currently with iWeb, their network is pretty good and we have used Softlayer in the past and I do admit they were good as well.

Of course if you factor that in, but that's an obvious business move that had to be made. If you were in their position, what would have been different?

I don't want to start a debate here I just personally like their network and have always had great experiences with their support.

Just-ping shows me a little bit less average ping to my iWeb server than thePlanet server. However, pings from US cities are better at thePlanet.

I wouldn't have lied about the network being able to handle 100TB servers. I then wouldn't turn round and change the ToS to ban all services that happen to be used by clients on the tail end of the bandwidth sucking distribution.

While we're talking about "obvious business moves" I would first start by not offering 100tb when it's economically unfeasible to provide it on a large scale to those who actually intend on using it.

Naturally, as ThePlanet is in the central US while iWeb is in Canada.

IWeb all the way. They are a good datacenter and given the config they offered you should jump at it.

Softlayer has to work out some issues IMO so go with Iweb.

SoftLayer has one of the best networks i have seen.

There private networks make backups great.

Sadly most people dont know how to use there private network.
I backup 50+ GB a day (nightly backups) to off site raid disks.

I can only say good stuff for softlayer.

+1 for SoftLayer as well. They don't have anything to explain to anyone on this board. All of the rampant speculation and wild accusations are pure hearsay. SoftLayer has handled each of these situations professionally by refusing to violate their privacy policy. As a customer I would have a much much bigger problem with them if they responded publicly to an internal matter between themselves and their customers. The fact of the matter is that nobody has the facts except SoftLayer and their customers. It's none of our business what goes on between them.

they are being accused of cutting off the servers of their clients without proper due notice as outlined in your tos, and instead terminated them with tickets saying 'now'. directly by their clients.

all they have done to respond to this has been to issue a statement saying 'we can talk about the affairs of our clients'.

this wasnt an affair of their client. they were being accused of violating their own tos, directly. and they were going to be sued.

Well I think they have adopted your approach but as a result I and others have voted with our feet. While I agree that they shouldn't violate privacy the issues I refer to are not centered around simplecdn or anyone else.

I'm confused. Hardware upgrades at Softlayer are sooo expensive. Also they don't have any promotions and special offers like thePlanet had very often. I think I will go with iWeb (2Gb RAM vs. 12Gb RAM, 2x250Gb HDD vs. 2x1000Gb HDD -- Softlayer can't beat this offer). I'd prefer to migrate to another server within the Softlayer datacenter but they don't have any good offers. I've been using thePlanet dedicated server for several years but the price for this server still same at price list.

The network of Iweb is really good, especially considering the value for money. I can't remember when I had a network-related issue with Iweb last. Also connectivity to Europe is ok.

Iweb's new "Smart server" offerings are nice, they run on Supermicro chassis if I am not mistaken.

I see on SoftLayer's site that they are offering a special on HD and RAM upgrades until tomorrow:
    http://www.softlayer.com/specials/

Looks like a decent deal to me.

    2ameeriklane:

Look at bandwidth they offer. It's only 3000Gb per month. It's not possible to get a 10Tb bandwidth at Softlayer. My 10Tb server is a summer promo at thePlanet so I can't use this "double ram" offer since they offer only 3Tb.

I have a good experience with SoftLayer
but maybe IWeb can beat it.
