    Amazon vs. NetFlix? :D

Amazon.com has the following letter to customers on their home page:

    Dear Customers,

Millions of people are already Amazon Prime members and enjoy unlimited free two-day shipping. Today, we're excited to add a brand new benefit to Amazon Prime: unlimited, commercial-free, instant streaming of 5,000 movies and TV shows.
(the letter goes on, including with an offer for a one month free trial of Prime)

Do you guys think Amazon is taking on Netflix's instant streaming? It seems like it. Netflix definitely has a bigger streaming selection, though...

I heard about this on the radio this AM. I think it will create competition between them..

Yep. How long until Apple unveils such a plan?

The issue would be the revenue model, though, frankly. A lot of people say that $6.99-$9.99 monthly is vastly underpriced if the selection is good, at least based on how Hollywood makes its money these days. In other words, you run into the 30-90 day release delays, potential blockage of hit movies, etc.

There are a lot of good newer shows on it. However, there are also a ton of shows that are missing from it. I'm guessing there are whole studios that would not allow them to stream movies due to the large gaps in available movies.

It would be worth more if it had more of the popular shows.

I haven't tried amazon yet; although, I do know netflix has a nice mod developer community. Additionally, they just cut a deal with CBS, old shows and new shows will be available to watch instantly (this includes Star Trek).

Apple has it's Apple TV but strangely, they are late to the party because Netflix seems to have a domination of TVs embedded with Netflix capabilities, gaming consoles (saw an older woman with it for her Nintendo Wii) and embedded on DVD players.

Comcast has Xfinity TV, where you can watch online if you are a Comcast subscriber.

Amazon can rely on it's name and brand to promote it's product.

Like I said, Apple is strangely silent on the matter. Maybe they are looking to focus for some kind of iPad solution / exclusive iPad offer. I heard something about Apple TV but nothing so far!

You may be right. That would simultaneously promote the iPad (and iPhone?) while allaying some of the copyright infringement fears held by the major studios.

I'm thinking the way Apple sneaks and "innovates" - some kind of exclusive content to go with the "exclusive" iPad to make it a better selling point with iPad 2

If you have the free prime student account you can't watch any of the videos. Only paid prime users can watch videos.

Correct. Amazon Student (aka free Prime membership) users are not eligible. That said, you can do the free 30-day trial of Prime... for 30 days!

I'm a Netflix customer too. It seems most likely this new competition will benefit consumers.

Good, we need some good alternatives to netflix. Competition is healthy.

If Amazon wants to succeed it needs hardware support and to get its service onto devices.

That being said for many Amazon loyalists who order their books, games, BluRays, etc. almost exclusively from Amazon it is just another reason to get Prime.

At the end of the day the main benifit of Prime is free 2 Day shipping on everything and this movie streaming stuff is just gravy.

Seems like they have almost all the same movies as Netflix. Viewing quality looks to be about the same too.

    Definitely prefer the Neflix interface.

I bought a used Wii to stream netflix... the quality of the picture isn't Blu-Ray or even DVD, but very watchable. What I like about it best is the kids programming... no commercials. I was once a film major in college and I enjoy watching older movies. Just finished "Aces High" circa 1976 tonight. The other cool thing is the GUI on the Wii. I can stop, pause, surf for other programming, come back to a flick I started watching last week, etc. We downgraded to basic cable when we got netflix two months ago and on Monday we will cancel the basic cable and I will be setting up a media computer to watch Internet programming. My main concern is bandwidth. I live in an area where everyone has Cox cable for broadband and soon everyone will have netflix or another streaming provider... will there be enough pipe? With the $100.00 a month I am saving I can afford to go to HostingCon this year!
