Nameserver Help

Hello - new to this forum, so if I am in the incorrect spot, please forgive me.

I run a small hosting company. I have two dns servers for my clients on two totally separate networks.

Recently one of my nameservers is locking up. I am setting up a new one, but I can not figure out why the secondary NS is not taking over. I do have both registered at all the domain name companies.

Any insight will be great...

Thanks...TP

What do you mean "locking up"? Do you mean it is not answering?

What do you mean "not taking over". It's not like the second name server is just idle until the first one dies..... name servers do not work this way.

They are ALWAYS BOTH answering queries. 50/50.
When one dies, the other one should get all of the queries.

So when you are saying the other one is not take over.... in reality... both of your name servers are down. Just what you consider the "second" one.... is always down.

Exactly, you need to explain what do you mean by "locking up" and "not taking over", in order to suggest you a solution.

Sorry - for the delayed response. I was being a bozo. After posting, I realized I could not ping the secondary nameserver IP address. That will do it every time. Server can't answer queries a network doesn't see it!

Have you check the NIC config of your box and make sure the secondary IP is added OK to the server?
