Ideal VPS to host several game servers?

    Hello,

    let's say I wanted to host a 10 slot counter-strike: source server,
    10 slot counter-strike 1.6 server, a mumble server & a call of duty 4 server.
What minimum specs of a VPS would i require?

    Would: 1024MB RAM - 100GB HDD - 2x2GHz CPU be sufficient?

    Thanks

I would suggest go for dedicated for such server.
What you are saying is very high resource intensive.

Let's assume I was going to go for a VPS. What specs would I have to pick?

    That's another thing then.

Your choice of 1GB of memory would be ok for a starter. Please note that you would need to upgrade on a later date.

Just by starting those servers it would eat around 500MB of memory.

Either pay for a dedicated server or get these at a GSP..... You simply DO NOT WANT to host gameservers on a VPS, especially not more than one.

You will need a XEN/Dedicated server.

    okay thanks

His VPS is fine for one CS server. You don't need hdd speed (main benefit of dedi) if your CPU is not limited down and you have enough ram

Your just better off getting a core2duo dedi, vps is not the way to go, so many other people bursting ram on there and using space, not worth it for running all those services.

I would suggest a core 2 duo with 2 gbs of ram on a dedi not a vps

    Avoid all those problems.

Get a VPS on Xen/XenServer virtualization platform.

What you would be doing is putting too much of a load on the CPU. The host might deny you service, and lag would be very bad.

You'll need a Xen VPS, as Xen usually use a baremetal setup, giving you a dedicated CPU core for just your vps.
I personally have used nfoservers.com's VPS and it worked pretty good for game servers. I'm using dedicated with another company, and the dedicated is MUCH better, but it was still playable on the Xen vps.

If you need multiple servers though, you could contact a GSP and see if they'll give you a discount for renting multiple servers.

They don't dedicate a CPU core to you, it's pretty much equal share.

^No it's not. I had four servers running on nuclear fallouts single core plan and they all ran just fine.

They also they say on the order page how they have them setup.

They may be an exception, but typically XEN servers don't get a dedicated core, HT or not.

If you are going to use a VPS and host multiple servers than the lag will start to build up.

    This.

I used to host 2 servers (CS 1.6) on a P4 2Ghz with 2gig mem; The box couldn't handle more than 25-30 players.

CSSource and CoD require more resources so you defo need a dual core and at least 2 gigs of mem

10 slot game servers are doable on a VPS, but probably not much more than that. Your major problem will be getting access to dedicated processing power. Next on the list is if you have sufficient amounts of RAM. Disk I/O is not too much of a concern for a game server, along with disk space (srcds is only 5-7GB last time I checked)

For the price of a decent VPS to cover the memory usage of the gameservers, I would have to recommend a GSP, atleast that way you(or anyone else on the box) wont suffer from srcd's fluctuations in mem usage.

I would recommend going with XEN or a small Dedicated server would do. Otherwise, a GSP would do.
