A couple of questions about WiredTree and KnownHost

    Hi!

I have a couple of questions for the ones of you who use, or have used, both KnownHost and WiredTree VPS offers:

    - What's the difference in their customer portals? I know that WT has a set of statistics and utilities in their "grove" portal. Does KnownHost have anything similar? How do they compare?

    - In terms of management, what does WiredTree provide over KnownHost to justify the higher price they charge? Do they do anything extra that KnownHost doesn't cover? Do they do something better?

    - How the initial state of their VPSs compares in terms of WHM setup, firewall, etc.?

    - Are there any other noticeable differences between them, other than price and geographic location?

I've read the reviews in this forum (thanks for those!), but the points above were not clear to me.

    Thanks everyone in advance!

    1. KnownHost doesn't have a customer portal like WiredTree. WT's is more feature rich with graphs that show your usage, in addition to contacting support, etc. KH's is just a simple portal for you to pay your bills and contact support.

    2. Through my experience with both, I would say you can't go wrong with either in terms of support. WT does have active monitoring in place where they'll restart services in your VPS should they go down. However, regarding higher price, I don't feel it's justified because KH's support is awesome.

    3. A VPS from KH is more bare with a lot of settings at default. Upon delivery, you have run through the brief cPanel setup wizard which allows you to choose which DNS server to run, which FTP, what nameservers, etc. They do some things to optimize/secure the VPS, such as changing the SSH port from the default 22 and installing CSF firewall.

WT's is completely set up from the moment you receive it. They even set up an initial account with the domain you signed up with. A lot of settings have been adjusted from the default. Chkrootkit and rkhunter is also installed by default with crons set to scan daily. CSF is also installed by default. Really, they deliver it ready-to-go, which in some sense, is what full management is all about.

    4. Besides the (very) nice portal that WT offers and how they set up your VPS initially, there's not much difference. Both offer superior support 24/7. KH does offer panels other than cPanel (DirectAdmin and Plesk) which I think is great.

KH also has a customer forum where they report outages or service interruptions. WT's client portal is on the same network as their customers' servers and from seeing their recent downtimes, that was a big issue where they simply were not able to communicate with their clients which led to customers being frustrated as tickets could not be submitted.

For the money, I feel KH is truly a superior value, especially since they've upgraded everyone's packages free of charge for Christmas last year. That was a great touch and definitely builds customer loyalty.

    Good luck with your decision!

As of today we don't have a portal like the Grove. Of course this may change.

@Wickedfactor Very nice summary! I pretty much agree with most of what you said.

Having said that I really liked the WT Grove, I really miss that bit of functionality. I also think that in general their support is a bit faster then KH (mostly during after hours). Keep in mind I'm not saying that KH's support is slow, they are VERY fast it's just that on average over time WT is a bit quicker.

As for the pro-active support, it's nice to have but on a day to day basis it really did not make a significant difference to KH's support. Yes services are restarted etc... but there were a few incidents where for a specific reason one or more of my sites were having issues that were NOT detected. Anyway I don't think this a make or break feature.

Where KH really excels is uptime. I am completely amazed at how rock solid my VPS is. This is truly "turn it on and forget it". Really I can't tell you how happy I am.

Another superior area is the Customer Service. They are much more pro-active at upgrading customers accounts (they seem to do it almost every year). So your account doesn't stagnate and start looking overpriced since you are getting regular "upgrades". They also handle problems in a very thoughful way.

The last area is that they manage their servers very well. They may not have the latest and greatest CPU but they make sure their servers offer top notch performance. When I moved to them my 512MB VPS outperformed another top tier providers 1024MV VPS.

    Thanks, Nnyan.

KH's uptime is actually something I should have talked about because it's absolutely superb. The facilities they've chosen to house their servers are truly world-class.

    Wow!

@WickedFactor, @ Nnyan: Thank you for the detailed replies. Very useful info.

@KnownHost: You got me intrigued. Hypothetically, when would that be? ;-)

If anyone else has additional info, please post. I think this might be useful to others too.

    Thanks again!

I used Wiredtree, i could help you out on them.

    - The Grove portal is very advanced and has a lot of options. One bad thing is they don't use it to post actual information about technical problems and downtimes. Site5 for example has an ever nicer worked out portal and they do post information about technical problems.

    - Wiredtree provides full management. They do their best to help you with all your technical questions. They are a bit overpriced i think, considering the major recent downtimes. Wiredtree takes backups in case they have to restore a server but doesn't provide account based backups, don't know if Knownhost does that.

    - I know that the VPS at wiredtree are ready to go, WHM is fully setup. So it is fully managed, at Clubuptime for example i tought it was really weird u have to setup WHM and everyhting yourself if u buy a managed VPS ? Still don't understand that one.

    - Wiredtree will give better connections to Europe, Knownhost has no east-coast location.

Normally we do this for clients -- the the general information to perform the task isn't provided, such as we're not told what you want to use as the DNS server addresses, we leave it be for the time being.

we fully install cPanel/WHM, harden the server, install all OS updates, recompile Apache/PHP, and migrate accounts on most managed server installations.
