    Question Best dedicated host in the Northeast?

    I'm looking for a host in the Northeast. I need low latency from the New York/Philly area, so the closer to New York or Philadelphia the better, but anything from Washington DC to Montréal will be OK.

    I'm going to need two servers - a mid-range LAMP/cPanel box and a lower end Windows box with lots of storage space and RAM. I'm OK with doing both of those on the same box with virtualization. And if the datacenter is in or around NYC I could alternately do colo on the Windows box. In terms of bandwidth I'm at 3TB/mo right now, but expect that to increase substantially in the next year. I also need a good support plan - one where if I don't feel like doing something (like a 3rd party software install) I can offload it to them and competent people will give it "best effort".

    So, what hosts in the Northeast would you recommend? Which ones are reputable, have good prices (especially on bandwidth), and good support?

    Thanks for your help.

    What's your budget?

    If you're looking for quality, I highly recommend Voxel.net. They're in New York.

    I'm currently paying $1065/mo. and would like to stay in that range but get a generous bandwidth allotment for that price.

    Voxel is one I found today that seems like a decent option.

    On the LAMP server (min specs)...

    Quad processor
    8GB RAM
    2 x 1TB SATA drives (RAID 1)
    64 bit Linux (CentOS?)
    Good backup solution (w/ MySQL support)
    cPanel
    FULLY managed (incl. 3rd party application support)

    On the Windows Server (min specs)...

    Dual processor (not hyper threaded)
    8GB RAM (12+ preferred)
    4 x 1TB SATA drives (RAID 1 or RAID 5 - bigger the better)
    Windows 2008 Server 64 bit
    Managed, but no need for application support

    Hi jay5r,

    You can take a look on GloboTech Communications : gtcomm.net
    They have a reliable service. You have the option with R1Soft back-up
    and also fully managed service.

    This kind of specs are standard, i hope they can help you.
    Clean premium bandwidth by BGP. 24/7/365 online support.

    They are located in Montreal, so not far away from NY.

    Regards

    While I would agree with you in most respects, they're not in the North East so it doesn't apply here. Although you'd be right if you needed hosting in Florida.

    Definitely go with Voxel. We have had some business with them in the past and they are great. There is also Ezzi.net, but I don't think they are fully managed.

    We've used Voxel as our primary network provider for 6 years now. You'll pay a little more, but it's well worth it.

    Hey jay5r,

    Voxel tends to set the bar here on WHT for people looking for hosting specifically in NY. Voxel operates a reliable, performance-centric network, and receives all kinds of praises from their customers here on WHT.

    Another company you should take a look at in NY is www.Webair.com. I recently (a few months ago) toured Webair's newest data center out in NY (http://www.webair.com/datacenters/ny1/) and was very impressed. Their new facility is gorgeous, managed properly, and their support team is extremely dedicated.

    A quick search will reveal a whole slew of additional - and viable - options in the NE.

    Good luck!
    Thanks,

    Give Natcoweb a buzz, they provide good support and are particularly happy working with custom requirements whether it be esoteric hardware or high bandwidth. They are based out of Equinix in North Bergen.

    With the "FULLY" managed portion, you are eliminating alot of qualified data centers in the NY/NJ/PA tri-state region, and many mentioned in this thread already. Consider dropping that or getting a 3rd party to handle it...and options are wide-open.

    For what the original poster is willing to pay, they still have a number of very viable "managed" options. (Including - but not even close to being limited to - Burst, a few of your resellers, and both of the companies I mentioned previously.)

    So I sorta shelved the issue when my host seemed like they were going to work out problems I was having with them not honoring the terms of the package they sold me, but that didn't happen so I'm back at it...

    I've decided to split up the two servers. The Windows server needs to be in the NorthEast, I'll get the LAMP server from NatNet (after many friends recommended them unconditionally).

    So the Windows server is the issue at the moment. Here are the specs...

    * Windows 2008 Server, 64-bit
    * 2 or 4 core (not hyperthreaded), decent clock speed
    * 12 to 16 GB of RAM

    * Hardware-based RAID 1
    - 2 smallish (80GB +/-) drives in the RAID
    - SSD or SAS drives preferred (but not absolutely necessary)
    - Backup

    * 2nd drive that's big & slow
    - 1TB+
    - SATA
    - No RAID, no backup

    * Apache (not IIS)
    * Some type of firewall
    * Remote Desktop
    * OS, firewall and Apache "fully managed"
    * 1TB of bandwidth/month
    * 4+ IP addresses

    I'm currently paying $450 for an unmanaged colo box (with a big external RAID) and a managed Cisco 5505 firewall. I don't want to go too much higher than that (if possible).

    I've investigated some of ones people have mentioned above.

    Voxel - Doesn't offer managed Windows servers
    Web Air - I've seen too many bad comments about them on webmaster boards
    DedNow - My current host - not an option - they've had their chance to keep my business.
    We Link - No meaningful info on their website - I want someone bigger than that
    FastServ - Email sent, waiting for response

    Any other suggestions that have low latency to Philly and NYC? When you suggest someone say why you're suggesting them. "Go with ABC Hosting" isn't all that inspiring...

    Thanks!
