New Internet Service.

I was thinking about starting a new service for webmasters that wanted to promote there Forum.

My plan is to form an alliance with three or four "Forum addicts" then when a client wanted to start a new forum or had a forum that has lapsed into a coma, we would go over to the forum and start posting like mad after a week or two the client would have one of the most active forums on the net.

We would also offer a back-up service .. every few months we would resit the forum to give it an added boost.

What do you think of this idea.

Well, D, when I move my personal site that has a complaint dept message board, I'll let you know. It doesn't pay anything, but nobody flames you for your opinion there. (yet) I get a lot of stuff outa my sytem there
Sometimes the companies I complain about even take notice and clean up their act.

This is a totally new idea that is only just forming in my head from a comment made in another thread. Rather than just dismiss the idea I though I would throw it open and see what develops.

I would need to talk to interested parties and then between us work out rates etc. Perhaps it could be done on a roster system.
from the quick response I have had I think it is definitely worth investigating.

Of course we would have to learn to spell, however I do have a spell checker that checks my posts ... just to lazy to use it most of the time. (jspell spell checker)

I too, use a spell check 90% of the time on semi-/formal messages... If its unformal however, you see a true art of spelling

edit: And yes this does seem like its worth the small amount of trouble, count me in.

Spell checkers are a good idea, but they're not foolproof:

Seriously, I'm not sure it's that good an idea, at least in the case of forums that have "gone into a coma." The risk would be to irritate/alienate whatver existing members the forum does have, because they now have to deal with a bunch of bozos posting about themselves and each other, without knowing the history and culture of the forum.

Of course, if you actually were to think of this as and offer it as a service, that could be addressed by spending some time reading everything that has been posted and trying to fit in... sort of like any good new forum member. And of course in your scenario where you only show up when requested by the forum's owner... well, it's up to them anyway.

Otherwise, once the gang leaves to move on to some other forum, those "comatose" places might be even worse off than they were before, with the original members having been chased away.

Yeah, I was thinking that.
It would have to be an ongoing thing.
Initial month 20 posts per "hired poster" per week.
Then after that, a certain number per "hired poster" per month.
Leave it to the site owner to determine if it's working, and should continue, be reduced, or dropped entirely. If it works, you can drop it entirely. If it's kinda working, you can continue.
The site owner should also be posting in response / addition to the "hired posters" or it won't work. (re: rowing a boat on dry land)

Oh, and oneliners, or a smilie, can be posted, but doesn't count toward the agreement.

well, im confused... are you basically going to go post just to bump the total forums post count... with semi-spam?

interesting idea Doc

at the invitation of the forum owner, and x amount of posts per month and after reading all posts and commenting in an intelligent manner

and perhaps a syntax-check ?

can't see how you could charge for it though

Perhaps the forum owner would be more inclined to offer free banner ad placement for a few months rather than cold hard cash?

some may prefer paying cold hard cash to keep the proposed team away

Vito, That's exactly what I was thinking.
Offer four to five people a 4 (or 5) to one banner rotation for posting in the forums. Win - win.
The poster will then be motivated to post stimulating things so his banners will be seen more often.

susannad, LOL
