Cisco Nexus 2148 question

I m thinking of buying a cisco nexus 2148 for my rack, my questions is that will it work as a normal L2 switch or as I have read I will still need a nexus 5000 series switch ?

thanks in advance

Hi there,

Yes - they act solely as line card extensions for an actual Nexus. You will need to buy an actual Nexus switch, such as the 5000 to act as a controller. Any reason why you were thinking of going Nexus? If you're just looking for a 48-Port L2 switch, I'd just go with a Cisco WS-C2950G-48-EI - you can get one for around $200.

I was looking for a 48 port GigE switch and thought 2148T could be used as a standalone switch in a rack (was'nt sure).

Take a look at the HP Procurve 2848 switches... They can be had for a decent price and are great.

Yeah if you just need a solid GIG switch, the HP 2848 (J4904) is a great device. Unbeatable in terms of reliability and performance at their ~$500 fleabay price point.

Yep... ditto. Also love the lifetime next business day replacement on these!

Couldn't help but say you're asking for it, however, not gonna bash on them. Merely going to bolster the HP argument, those switches are pretty sweet. If you're looking to go new, the J9280#ABA is the alternative.
