Need some opinion for buying a new dedicated server

    Hi there,

I have a video streaming site (ClipShare), it has about 40k UV and 200k PV in a day.

Currently im using apache to serve the php and lighttpd for the flv and thumbtails.

This is my current server specification.
    Core 2 Quad Q9400 2 x 2.66 GHZ
    8192 MB (8 GB)
    2 x 1500 GB Sata
    100 Mbps unmetered

Since my site is a streaming site, my bandwidth easily reach to 100Mbps so i need to upgrade my dedicated server to soemwhere else. Any suggestions?

8 core system, 12-16 GB RAM 100 Mbps or 1 gbps unmetered.

hd space is typically up to you and where you stand.

can you explain why i need 8 cores?

i have core 2 Quad, according to the top command

my average loading is about 15.

also, major problem is the maxclients. i cant have any more than 1200 because if i increase it too high, the server is overloaded.

is that meaning i don't have any ram for my cpu?

    thanks

Add more RAM. Try 16GB and upgrade 100Mbps unmetered to 1Gbps. I think, that it will be much better.

I would agree with Andrius, you need to add more RAM. 12 or 16GB should be great. Regarding processor, A xeon 3460 should be a good upgrade from core2quad. you will get 4 cores(8 threads with HT).

Instead of upgrading your server, why not you consider on hosting your video with Content Delivery Network as it will seriously lower down your bandwidth usages and gives you better server load as the video will be retrieved from CDN server.

    CDN is too expensive really.
the money i pay for CDN. i can buy multiple servers in different regions.

I have a frd. he has a site ranked 2000 in alexa.
he paid roughly 80k USD for the CDN service. funny thing is.
he purchased another server in 100TB for testing (nginx setting). served half of his traffic (static files)

all i know CDN can speed up your transfer and i dun see any advantage a part from that.

Be careful there, you never know when the plug might get pulled.
