what is this Supermicro part?

We recently received 7 Supermicro servers, and two of them seemed to have one or two of these things. The vendor doesn't know what they are. Does anyone here know? Please see picture attachment.

Thanks

that belongs to part of the air shroud assembly for supermicro 2U chassis. usually you get 2pcs with the chassis. they are to be installed onto the bottom of air shroud, and they are designed to "narrow" or concentrate the air flow from mid-chassis fan to low-profile CPU heatsink as well as RAM modules installed on dual Xeon socket 1366 server board.

Thanks very much. I guess our vendor didn't know what to do with them so they just threw them in the accessories box. But the machines have been doing well. Actually, those two 2u's are idle at the moment so I can open them and see. One is from a different vendor, Systemax, and probably has them installed properly.

thanks again,

Peter

It's a good idea to make sure they're installed correctly. Improperly installed (or not installed) air baffles can create hot spots, which you won't like.

Exactly... things might seem OK now, but wait until you have heavy load for whatever reason and the CPU starts throttling or worse things start happening..

Can someone show what these look like installed? I can't for the life of me envision it. It looks too long, like it would sit over the heatsinks rather than in front.. blowing air over them rather than through them.
