I'm looking to move our MySQL and web server (running nginx) onto a new dedicated server to take the load off of our current box but I am looking for some opinions on hardware and hosts.

The database is used for a moderate sized vBulletin forum (80 users online average) and is used for some fairly heavy usage databases mainly related to game servers (total size is roughly 10GB). Ideally I would like to spend less than $100 per month on a server based on the East Coast of the States.


Does anyone have any suggestions?

There are a number of providers on the east coast.

You shouldn't need anything too powerful, but can you indicate what current hardware you are using and the current load as this will be most useful in advising you.

Also do you have any high bandwidth requirements, offering file downloads etc? Or should we assume minimal bandwidth required.

Just to clarify, are you looking to split the MySQL and web boxes apart, or just move the one site to a new server with MySQL and nginx? 2 Servers will be hard to pull off on a budget of $100 per month, but the single server option might be feasible.

That depends on how good performance is on the box. To clarify, I am looking for a single server at a budget of $100. I already have a server used for gameservers and other applications. I am just trying to move mysql off to another box

Bandwidth is a bit of an issue (we currently use 100TB.com, so it isn't an issue there), as we use slightly over 14 TB of bandwidth on this single server in a month.

Have you done as much optimisation as you could on the software side? Think JavaScript minification, gzip encoding for text, setting headers to allow browsers to cache images, etc.?

Yes we have. But like I said, a large amount of it is from gameservers.

I have worked out the bandwidth requirements assuming I can't get a server in the same datacenter to make use of the private network to be 10TB, calling it 12TB to be safe. Can anyone recommend a provider? I have emailed Tom @ 100 TB about getting an additional server from them, but I have yet to receive a response.
