859compute.com

Hi guys, I'm trying to figure out if this is a normal situation for all hosting companies. My blog site is very popular since it's been around for 10+ years. One time, one of my wordress themes got featured on the wordpress.org front page and that brought even more traffic to my site. I used to support a few popular php scripts etc. Either way I'm usually requiring a lot of bandwidth. However, is it true that just because you use a lot of bandwidth, cpu and memory that you are automatically considered to have abused your account? I have not done any abuse. In fact, I barely ever blog any more. It's just a dilemma in my life because it's something I do not have a lot of time to support yet I do not want it to just go away. It has a google page rank of 6.

I bought a hosting contract with hostquack.com until March of 2011. After it was sold to 859compute.com and I noticed it was returning 404 a few days ago and I submitted the following support ticket and here are the replies I have gotten from their staff.

I need some advice.

Thanks

The more bandwidth you use, the more CPU/RAM is used to serve those requests. Shared hosting means you share CPU/RAM with other users (amongst other things) so if you are using more than your share of CPU/RAM, then you are considered to be 'abusing' the server.

I did find this in their Terms:
Quote:
CPU Usage User agrees that User shall not use excessive amounts of CPU processing on any of 859Compute's servers.
However it's very vague, it does not define exactly what they class as 'excessive'

That's called overselling. The new company is stricter. Hosting companies give you "unlimited" space and bandwidth but if your site gets too much traffic and uses too much cpu they'll kick you off. By having a busy site, you qualify to them as an abuser.

Not much you can do except find a more lenient host.

Hmmm... that does not sound like a very good support response. Do you know how much bandwidth your wordpress site was using? If your wordpress site is not properly optimized and you have a large amount of posts and visitors, it can definitely it up a large amount of CPU and cause serious problems in a shared web hosting environment. I would contact them again and ask them to be a little more specific.

Forgot to mention actually, installing something like wp-super-cache could solve this completely.

Not much doubt here that you'll have to move hosts if you want to avoid problems like this going further.

You know what, I just took a look at their website and their biggest plan only offers 1GB of bandwidth for $15.99 per month? That might be your problem, they are not really providing you with much to work with.

$15.99 per month for 1GB bandwidth?
I think you could find a better host and a VPS with that sum you paid.

I also couldn't see any indication of web space?

1GB is not enough these days, we offer miles more than that with our basic package.

I see a few complaints about 859compute around here.
