I've seen a variety of 3rd party email hosting services, especially for things like Exchange email. A quick google search turns up a lot.

I currently use eumx.net and find them very reliable. I have also used Fastmail in the past and was very happy with them. Eumx is cheaper so I switched but really liked Fastmail very much.

what is the correct name for this kind of service? I believe what I mention on the title is not a correct name (3rd party email hosting)

and I really think it depends on how you plan to access your mail. Fastmails web interface is fantastic. If you plan on using multiple computers go with Fastmail. 1 computer through Outlook or Thunderbird, etc. go with EuMX. Multiple devices along with a smartphone, Google Apps is probably best. I loved Fastmail until I got my iPhone. The Fastmail address book does not sync with anything else and that was the clincher for me.

I've used SherWeb in the past when I've needed Exchange e-mail accounts. I was very satisfied with the reliability of their service.
