Counter Strike server on a VPS

Hello all,
I'm new to the community and I have a question. Has anyone tried hosting a CS server on a VPS? What are your experiences? I have a nice VPS host but I have only 512+256 RAM. I want to know if someone tried hosting a larger CS server on a VPS like this and if it was sucsessful. I have unmetered BW and a 100Mbps connection, so that won't be the issue.

Does someone how much RAM a 32/16 slot CS server uses?

I'd try to check myself, but the gaming server isn't for me and I can't actually fill up a 32 slot server.

Thanks,

Nikola

Wow. Could someone confirm a 32 slot CS server uses 1,5-2 GB of RAM? That really seams a lot, counter strike is a 10+ year old game.

That sounds about right. The resources are in the number of concurrent users required. For FPS latency is paramount, and you don't want to be the guy 10fps behind because the host is swapping ram lol.

That means a single user uses 50-70MB of RAM, which still seems high to me. Then hosting 4 CS servers would require 8 GB of ram. That's a ~$200 worth dedicated server. It wouldn't pay out to resell gaming servers, you could never get 50$ for 32 slots to even cover the costs.

You are thinking from a user perspective, hosts deal in volume and density. Gamer server resellers are going to be running 8-16GB server class hardware, and using multiple sets of servers. It would be $200 retail to rent a server, but not $200 to host. A serious reseller is going to buy a quarter or half rack of space minimum, with dedicated gigabit drops or non-shared 100M drops per server. It makes all the difference in the world when you have the revenue to invest in your equipment versus relying on rentals.

Yes it's do-able, but eventually as you add the slots the resource usage will naturally climb, and the VPS provider may eventually need to suggest moving you to a more dedicated solution. Needless to say you should be able to find a low cost dedicated server, for near or less the same price as a high-end VPS, which will gladly get the job done for you, and would avoid disrupting other clients VPS's on the same node.

Lies 1-2 gb is a joke. I think for 32 slots no more than a few 100mb. What proccessor have you got and how many cores?

Game servers tend to be resource intensive and affect performance for other users on the server. You'll find that a lot of VPS providers ban them specifically in their terms of use. I suggest you go for a specialist game server provider rather than a VPS.

You can have the fastest cpu and 16 cores.... whont mean much if the server has to swop out ram to hdd every 20 seconds... kinda like hooking a carvan upto a f1 racing car.....

SRCDS is a massive RAM user; but not 1-2G for a 32 slot. We pushed 36 slots of gMod on ~768MB RAM.

If you've got a VPS, you could try it and test it out?

Ram might also depend on the kernel, some elite cs server provider recompile them for 1k fps to attract more kiddies who don't quite understand what fps is.

1.6 32 player should be within 300MB ram limit with no modifications.

Thank you for your responses.

Fizzadar, I do have a server but there is no way I can fill up 32 slots. If it's what you guys say, using 300 mb of RAM and working nice on 768MB of RAM, that sounds good.
If someone can fill up a server with ~20 players, it'd be nice if he could contact me to test it.

Not sure about CS but I was hosting a 32-slot Call of Duty 4 (Modern Warfare) on a dedicated server Windows 2008 though and the most I've ever seen was 500MB.
