Question

Hello!
I would like some people to list here the most wanted features on a Web Host, as well as their price range. Please, be realistic and don't give me "dedicated server for 10$/month) we all know it is impossible.

I would be interested to know what please you most here, so we can find what is the best to give out

Someone else just made a similar request on another forum...
http://www.tips-tricks.com/ubb/Forum10/HTML/000287.html

You can see my comments there on this question. I look to spend no more than $25 a month, preferably less than $20.

I know I am not the best person to say what I want on a server, but consider my reply coming from the web designer that I am and tell me what you think of this:

(account allowing sub domains)
-100+ ftp/pop3 accounts
-500 mb of HD
-over 10 gb of bandwidth
-Unlimited sub domains pointing inside the root directory structure. Sub domains would also include real domains pointed.
-PHP3 (or 4)
-ASP (ChiliSoft?)
-CFM (??)
-Linux Slackware (I don't like NT, crashes too often)
-Apache
-MySQL
-Other Databases a plus
-Personal cgi-bin directory, allowing perl to be ran from anywhere in the dir structure
-.htaccess functions (custom error pages, protected directories, anti-leech, etc)
-Good samples of work in all supported languages, databases, apache functions
-Access to my own DNS entry
-Of course, good quality support, fast!
-Real server
-Control panel
-Telnet Access
-SECURE server

Hmmm I beleive that would cover all my needs. Now, don't take this as a pub, because Can-Host Networks (the company I work for) doesn't support ASP or cfm as wella s some otehr criteria I stated... and support some I didn't

I beleive this would fulfill anyone's need... if not, tell me what else should be added? (I am thinking about thsi subject for some time already and trying to figure what the best package would be... so when the time comes that I have to work on my own server package... I am able to do it the way I and everyone wants!)

Any comments?

Hi tk and Felix,

You might be interested to know that I've found an Open Source port for ASP to Linux/Unix machines, and not have to buy ChiliSoft licences.

Now if I can only remember the damn URL...

As for my preferred features, check that link above...

Cool

Eddie,

LOL! I'll take five of those any time ;-) And make a killing over here....

Felix,

You will be delighted to know I've found the Open Source module for running ASP. I just hope you're running Apache with mod_perl installed ;-) (mod_perl is the most important bit, so install it if you don't have it!)

For anyone else interested, this is the URL for running ASP under Apache/mod_perl :

http://www.nodeworks.com/asp

Of course... You still have to buy the Linux version of CF ( But oh what the hell ;-)

Great, thanks
And yes, we run apache with mod_perl.

Oh well, buying CFM is at least a bit less than buying ASP _AND_ CFM (plus the fact ChiliSoft ASP was bought by cobalt... and we had _really_ bad experiences with them)

Thank you, I'll read about it to see how good it is... you may just have helped us poor isp (_sigh_)

Ewwww.... I never did like Cobalt ;-) Though I have heard mixed comments about ChiliASP, so if I was a web host, I wouldn't have been prepared to pay $395/495(?) for a one year licence... At least with CF you get a licence for life.

Not a problem Glad I could help.
