There no "tool" for that. You can only notice it when you have physical access to the server.

If cPanel is installed on the server, YES you can now if it is a dedicated server or VPS.
Instead of the logo (VPS optimized shown on VPS), you can also visit the license verification page on cPanel.net

I suppose that in general that would be impossible because there are alot of other control panels then Cpanel.

There is no tool available that will tell you what the site is hosted on.

You can do a WHOIS lookup and if the datacenter does only provide dedicated servers you have your answer.

Then it can still run on a VPS if the client has installed visualization software on the server...

I suppose in this situation better to ask directly the owner and if that is not a secret get full answer.

If cPanel is installed on the server, then yes, that is one way of checking.

Exactly. Why not ask the company themselves? As long as they are honest and willing to tell you, it should be fine; but if not, you probably shouldn't use their services anyway.

If the VPS logo on cPanel does appear does not mean the company does not own/rent the server as they could have made the server into separate nodes and installed a VPS cPanel on it to keep elements of the server separate.
I have to agree just ask the company and if they are honest they will tell you if they own, rent, resell etc on their services.

At least you can check if it's a Dedicated Server license. If it's a VPS license, check with the provider for the reason AeonCube mentioned.

A dedicated server doesn't necessarily guarantee you better performance.
IMHO a reasonably specced VPS from someone like Linode will probably out-perform a cheap dedicated box costing €40-€50.
