VPS for VPN server

Hello,
I need to run a VPN server to use so I can transfer all the traffic from the tunneled connection (PPTP).
I know dedicated server is the best solution, in terms of network and other capabilities. But at this time I cannot afford a dedicated server that's why I want to go for a VPS for this purpose.

I want to see what are the main specs of a VPS that I should consider for this purpose.
Will a OpenVZ VPS be better or a Xen server? Is there anyone who can set up the VPS for me (since I don't have any experience with setting up a VPN server).

Thanks,
Ray

That depends, almost any hosting provider which will provide you with a VPS with full root access will be able to help you and install VPN on your VPS free of charge for you, you just need to make sure (for example if a VPS is on OpenVZ) that the tun/tap interface in enabled in the kernel. There are many hosting providers which will give you a full root access VPS but won't enable the tun/tap interface. And why is that... I'm not sure...

EDIT:

Also, if will be nice if you tell us what is your budget, do you need any specific location etc...

I would prefer XEN because you don't depend on the VPS host if he will load tun/tap or not, you can decide this by yourself in XEN.

Please note that in most cases XEN VPS will be more expensive than OpenVZ so if you want to save a couple of bucks than it won't hurt to ask the hosting company if the tun/tap is enable or not.

I am considering a $20/month max budget. I can ask my provider about tun/tap in their OpenVZ VPSs. Location is not an issue for me.

What application do u recommend for VPN service? Preferably, I need an application where I can create "accounts" in it so I can give to some clients - to make some bucks out of it.

Burst premium VPS would do it, you can ask them to activate TUN/TAP for you, or activate it through vePortal.

Thank you guys for your help so far.
There is one thing I am still in the black about... I still need to know what application can provide PPTP VPN support in VPS?

I have seen some providers have installed Mikrotik on their VPS. Is Mikrotik configuring the VPN setup (account creation, etc.) or there should be other applications involved?

Mikrotik would require, not only a license (that you can't reuse), but also custom coding on your end to automate the creation. If you're wanting an OS specifically for this, you could always just use vyatta and write some scripts to automate the VPN creation.

Then again, a VPS w/ PPTP is easy to setup & automate as well and wouldn't always require a XEN/VMWARE based setup

Are you on node 19 or 20? Both of those nodes have a failed drive from the power outage. We were finally able to confirm it last night and have a tech on the way to replace them for us
