new account, email woes

Hello, I have a reseller accoutn with yourdomaingoeshere. (wonderful, i might add)
What I'd like an answer to is why after setting up a new account that was hosted elsewhere, does it take so long for email to synch up. I know it happens, but I'm having trouble explaining it.

My client is experiencing an issue where some mail is getting to him and some are not. I am not sure how to explain it to him in simple terms. also how long should I expect this non-delivery to last?
AND lastly, what is happening to the mail that is not getting to him? will it eventually come in or is it lost in the ether?

When you make a new account, you have to change the name servers for that domain, which in turn changes the MX records. It can take anywhere from 24-48 hours for DNS to propagate across the world.

The email he's missing is being bounced back to the sender, and it's possible he will receive it once DNS is back into the swing of things.

Thanks for the reply. The test emails he sent to himself did not get bouncebacks, but it seems to be mostly coming in now, just not the older stuff.

Sure not a problem! I was just dealing with the same issue as I moved my personal domain & email to a VPS, so a lost a little bit of mail, but most of it was not important.

Sorry for not seeing this thread groan I haven't logged in to WHT in forever - you have my gtalk and I don't mind answering simple questions like this although I admire your desire to learn on your own without bothering us.

Thanks Corey,
It's OK. it ended up clearing up shortly after so i didn't need to "bother" you anyways.
I know how accessible you guys are and that's one reason why I love your service.

Data_lore, these guys are genuine. His saying "without bothering us" does not mean he is bothered by people asking him questions.
That's just a common term that people use.
I've never had a question go unanswered in the friendliest manner.
I can't say enough about them. Best service i've had from any host.

Bar none.

I suppose it worth to check if ISP of your client blocked IPs of your mother company or not. As for me that is the reason of the issue.

Next time I'd suggest lowering the TTL time on your DNS a couple days before moving. This allows the DNS to change over faster. Then once you've moved increase this again.
