HostGator Reseller Hosting vs HostGator Dedicated Servers
I have narrowed down to picking either Hostgator Reseller Hosting or their Dedicated Server plan.
Here are my options monthly:
Reseller Aluminum (entry level) 50GB DSpace, 500GB BW $24.95
Reseller Diamond (high level) 200GB Dspace, 1400GB BW $99.95
Basic Dedicated Server 1G DDR Memory, 250GB HD, 1500 GB BW $174
I was originally looking at the Reseller Hosting plans because I wanted to make it easier for my clients that I'm helping with their WordPress installs.
So I was looking for a company that can white label a reseller hosting plan so I can be the webhosting company. They would have to have great support for my clients, able for me to have client management and billing software included.
The customer service rep indicated that I should start with the Reseller Aluminum first rather than the Dedicated Server because I can always upgrade to a Dedicated Server later on when I have more clients.
My concerns:
1) I'm dreading the day when I transfer from a Reseller Hosting to a Dedicated Server because then I would require for my clients to have downtime during the upgrade (perhaps 24 hours during propagation?). If the future downtime is less than 3 hours, then I don't have a problem with this.
2) I generally do not like shared hosting because I have to rely on having good neighbors that won't have any impact on my websites. Could I have a dedicated ip address on my Reseller Hosting plan? Customer Rep indicated yes, but I did not see that on the company features.
3) Hypothetical question: If you had over 30 Wordpress blog customers (assuming only one install per customer per account paying $6.95/month), would you choose Reseller Diamond or Basic Dedicated Server?
*important notes: the fact that I want a dedicated ip address as opposed to shared ip address, do not want headaches for any future upgrades and less management from me the better.
Thanks in advance for your help. Greatly appreciated.

With the reseller accounts you will get some level of support and you will be most probley be hosted on the same server has the shared hosting lot.
With their basic dedi i think this is unmanaged so basicly you will have to manage the server.
I would go for a basic reseller account on a dedicated ip with an ssl certificate, Once you have more people through the door you could then take alook at getting a managed vps plan.
Start small and work up the ladder, business doesnt take off overnight unless you either buy some clients or already have a good clientle base.
Regards
P.S dont rush in and buy a 1 year plan because its cheaper, it might work out more expensive in the long run if your unhappy!!!0

Thanks for the info uk_lad and thanks Dan for the individual breakdown.
It sounds that it may be better to start off at the Reseller Aluminum level (and order a dedicated ip address). Then each of my customers can also have their option to purchase their very own dedicated ip address, if necessary.
If the future upgrade (from Reseller Aluminum to a Basic Dedicated Server) provides minimum downtime, then perhaps I should take the baby steps and start with the Shared Hosting first.0
