I run my main HP laptop as a desktop that is on almost 24/7/365 for years now, and it's fine. I replaced a fan last month that starting to make noise, but otherwise, it's been great. I also use a Zalman laptop cooler, which helps with lifetime. It's a high grade aluminum cooler with all-over fan cooling.

My backup / portable studio HP laptop is one of the "problem" models from several years ago (high CPU temps), but it's fine with the Zalman cooler.

I think people tend to just beat the crap out of laptops sometimes. I don't understand it.

Personally, I really like the MacBook Pros - some resellers (at least in the UK) offer 2 year warranties as standard, and if not there's always AppleCare.

I had my previous one for around two years before I ended up managing to mess up a hard drive replacement - a screw coming loose, getting stuck between the logic board and casing (causing it to short), heating up and melting the plastic around the speaker = bad.

If I hadn't managed to botch it I am sure it would have continued to work for a fair bit longer (in fact... it still actually works just fine now - even the speaker).

Oh well, it gave me an excuse to get one of the nice new Core i5 ones anyhow

With that said I doubt you are going to be going for some kind of Falcon, Alienware, or other extreme laptop. Of course you know what my recommendation is going to be. But I would like to put my two cents in.... pick a Mac if you want.....

    - "Simple" ease of use
    - "Solid" reliability and support
    - "Superior" performance that can run just about any platform

Not to mention it has the highest resale value of any computer... its the best choice!

I personally prefer Lenovo ThinkPads and Dell Latitudes. I use both personally and have configured hundreds for my customers with very few non user related issues.

Dell - They offer a 3 year warranty & Next day on-site engineer to fix it if something decides to pack in - which has come in useful for me once!
