    SMTP error "MTA's poor reputation."

    Hi,
Some of my clients receive mail delivery errors when sending messages to some domains, following is the error about "MTA's poor reputation." :
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

    xxxx@xxxx.com
SMTP error from remote mail server after initial connection:
    host mail2.xxxx.com [1xx.1xx.1x9.1x]: 554-mail2.xxxx.com
554 Your access to this mail system has been rejected due to the sending MTA's poor reputation. If you believe that this failure is in error, please contact the intended recipient via alternate means.

http://mxtoolbox.com/ will show you the websites where your server IP is blacklisted. You will have to contact them and ask them to remove your IP from their black list.

They may ask you to make some changes on your server to avoid these in future, so you will have to make those changes.

Hate to ask, but is your server doing anything to earn a bad rep? Any of your clients using it to send things they shouldnt?

Personally, If i were in this situation, I would start by doing 2 things:
Review the mailservers logs. this can often be enlightening.
Communicate with the domain that is rejecting your mail. A lot of webmail providers and ISPs etc will let you sign up for a feedback loop, so that if one of their customers reports an email your server sent as spam, you find out about it immediately.

That of course has a few advantages. ISP is more likely to accept your mail if they know they can yell at you if there is a problem. More importantly, if a client of yours is doing something less than legit, you are likely to find out much faster, before this kind of crap ever has a chance to reoccur.

Was the recipient domain aol by chance? It sounds like one of their bounce messages. If it is, then yeah they are insanely strict with IP reputation, but ironically very easy to work with once you contact their postmaster site.

    Hope this helps.

senderbase.org is where you want to look. Chances are, your server is either brand new or misconfigured. If it's configured correctly, you will be upgraded to neutral or good after a month or two as long as no spammers are on your same IP block.

takes about a week to get from "Poor" to "Neutral" on senderbase/ironport, but only if the mailserver ip address is really legit and is not listed on any other RBL's.

    Hi,

    1) this appears to be an issue with your domain, but unless you tell us the domain that you actually are using, we can't really help you here.
    2) Have you checked other spam lists such as http://www.spamhaus.org/

    Hi,
Rechecking again on "mxtoolbox.com" I got the results:

    May be an open relay.
0 seconds - Good on Connection time
0.452 seconds - Good on Transaction time
OK - Reverse DNS matches SMTP Banner

How to correct this open relay?? I have a centos/cpanel server with Exim.
    Thank you

Does your mailserver require authentication to send, and will it send from just any domain, or only the ones you specify?

If the answer is I dont know, to either of those, then you have a blacklisting waiting to happen.

Also, as I mentioned before, you should consider opening a feedback loop with as many ISP's and webmail providers as possible. Since spammers like to target such recipients, having that feedback loop is one of the fastest ways you can find out if someone is abusing your server.

Feedback loops are easy to set up, and certainly easier than clearing up a situation later down the road if you get blacklisted.

If all else fails, take the server offline until you *know* its fixed.

    Hope this helps

I contacted senderbase.org and they said that one of my accounts was sending spam and in order to unblock my IP they asked me to send an email indicating what steps are being taken to mitigate spam from being sent from my IPs.
    Please help.

    Hi,

    You should have this enabled:
WHM >> Security Center >> SMTP Tweak

As far as I know cPanel ships with a closed relay server.
You can run a few commands via SSH to be sure.

    /scripts/fixrelayd
    /etc/rc.d/init.d/antirelayd restart
    service exim restart

Have you corrected the open relay issue you mentioned earlier? Have you looked over your mail server's logs and located how and why someone was able to use it to spam, or if it was a previous user of the IP space.

If yes to both, tell them this, specifying what you did.
If no, you might want to do so asap, or if needed, hire someone to do so.

This type of problem will get worse, not better, if left not fixed.
