    Godaddy.com or Nodaddy.com

I have around 30 domain names registered with Godaddy. I've been very happy with their service for the last few years now. A couple of weeks ago, I ran across a forum post from someone claiming Godaddy suspended their domain name due to a spam complaint. This user admitted to emailing other webmasters with related sites to request link exchanges.

As a result, this customer reports not only was the domain in question suspended, but all the domains in his account. As a result, he was charged over $6,000 to reinstate 32 domains.

I thought this could be one person's half truth, but have been concerned at the number of people reporting similar situations. One of my websites has a subscriber base of 22,000 subscribers that are emailed every two weeks. What happens if one of my competitors subscribes to my newsletter and then reports me to Godaddy for spam?

I have written a letter to Godaddy explaining my situation and asking for a response. So far, I haven't received anything.

I have no problem with a registrar suspended child porn sites or phising sites but it appears Godaddy doesn't mind taking things a bit farther. Has anyone else experienced this type of problem with Godaddy? What is the best domain registrar to use if you are sending to an email list each week?

    Thanks for any responses,

    Hi Brent,

    Welcome to WebHostingTalk.

An email could only be considered spam if it was sent to multiple recipients at 1 time. So, if you are requesting links, you should ALWAYS send then 1-on-1. This was the mistake the example you quote. Some webmasters WILL get upset if you spam them, and they will report you.

I can understand that GoDaddy MIGHT suspend the whole account for the spam problem of 1 domain, but it is not their normal way of operating. They would suspend the errant domain only (usually), unless the other domains also had complaints.

I don't believe the $6000 claim. GoDaddy will charge you $200/domain if you elect to keep the domain at GoDaddy and $60/domain if you choose to transfer out of GoDaddy. The person in your example could have negotiated that price for 1 domain, if it was only 1 domain doing the spamming. And, after an experience like having domains suspended by GoDaddy, they must have been crazy to keep their domain(s) there.

Yep. GoDaddy are quite strict with their ToS against domain owners. It is why many domainers avoid them. I can kinda understand their no tolerance policy with so many domains and customers under their umbrella.

Pretty much any other registrar would be better/safer than GoDaddy if you are sending out bulk email list every week. I'd suggest NameCheap, an eNom reseller.

I would say any other registrar would be safe, Dynadot has similar policies so I would be wary of them also. Take a look at Namecheap as stu suggested, I also like Moniker or DomainDiscount24.

    Thanks for the responses.

The guy posting that he had to pay $6,000 to Godaddy listed a few more details that I didn't include. He had 33 domains that were all pointing to the same VPS. He claimed the domains belonged to his customers that he was offering hosting to on the VPS. When one of the domains were accused of spam, Godaddy shutdown all the domains pointing to that same server.

When faced with the possibility of more downtime by transferring 33 customers to another registrar, he claimed it was a quicker option to pay the $200 per domain to get them cut back on and then transfer later.

I'm not here to trash Godaddy at all. I love the service they offer. I would just like to get some official explanation from them on this accusation and the numerous others floating around the net before I change my registrar. This is not something I really want to do.

    Thanks again for the responses.

    GoDaddy.com response

    To those concerned,

I am a representative in the Office of the President at Go Daddy.

We have been asked to address the concerns posted herein regarding our spam complaint procedures.

Go Daddy takes a very active role in fighting spam. We investigate every complaint received. That does not mean that we suspend anyone just because a complaint is made.

An investigation involves contacting the customer to determine whether they are abiding by our Terms of Service, and, specifically, our Anti-Spam Policy. If it is determined, based on our investigation, that the customer was sending spam, we may take action to correct the situation up to and including suspension of services provided for the offending domain/website.

For more information on our policies regarding spam, including how we define it, what we allow and don't allow, and what we do in cases of violation, please visit our Anti-Spam Policy at the following page:

We welcome you to contact us if you have any additional questions or concerns.

There you go. They wouldn't suspend all the domains in an account for 1 domain's spam. But if 1 domain was the server for the other domains, then they could all be affected only because they took out the server domain. In your example Brent, it would seem the customer was overcharged.
