How do you name your nodes?

This is meant to be more of a fun thread, but how do you name your servers? I've seen some really interesting and complex naming systems. I don't understand the point of it, as it makes it much harder to keep track of the age and information of a server, but they're still fun. Personally, we'll be using a simple number + letter system (I.E. - GTKC1(s1) for GraviTech Kansas City #1 [Server Config Type 1])

3 Parts to my naming convention

Part 1 - 3 character Airport Code (if no airport is nearby then I abbreviate the city name)
Part 2 - 2-4 character abbreviation for the server role
Part 3 - 2-3 digit indicator for the next increment in the number of roles defined that match the above.

I.E. JAXWEB01, JAXWEB02 are web servers in Jacksonville, FL
ORDDNS01 is my secondary DNS Server in Chicago, IL
MLBNET01 is my switch/router IP in Melbourne, FL

CAS (Exchange Client Access Server), HUB (Exchange Hub Tranport Server), MBX (Exchange Mail Box Server), DC (Domain Controller), FPS (File and Print Server), ESX (VMWare ESX Server), XEN (Citrix Xen Server), SQL (Microsoft or MySQL Server) are all common conventions that I use.

At the moment it's based on provision number, virtualisation type and location. Previously i've used colours, fictional characters and...... Star Trek.

I don't have servers to name any longer, but I do deal with clients that have anywhere between 5 - 1000 boxes.

Some of the best ones I've come across recently.

    Transformer names .. bumblebee.domain, optimusprime.domain etc.
    Disney characters .. mickey.domain, goofy.domain etc.

And weirdly, no kidding, body parts.

    arm.domain, leg.domain, foot.domain etc.

Never underestimate the power of nerds! Could you imagine being asked to name all of the first generation Pokemon in order during an interview? XD

Problem with that is you'd run out of names once you get semi-successful

    We have used server10 (1.0), server11 (1.1 - replacement), server20 (2.0), server21 (2.1 - replacement), etc in the past but we are in the process of shifting this to <Hosting Plan>-<Server #>.

I name my servers based on WWII firearms.

    garand
    browning
    thompson
    springfield

Currently I have only 4 servers so have been using U.S. firearms, but will "branch out" to other countries when I need to (mosin-nagant, arisaka, mauser, etc.).

Yep really, but none of the parts you might be thinking of

We use a quite simple system. All servers have a prefix and a number. Ex ws for webserver (shared hosting), vps, dedicated, cp (controlpanel) etc...

Could be fun with some more inspiring names such as other people have mentioned.. Such as bodyparts :-P But i think we will stick with this system :-P

We have some servers named completely random things. Then for sanity purposes just naming them by location. sjc001, dal001, ams001 etc. Although realizing really knowing the location isn't that helpful for technicians anyways. We already built systems before hand to be looking up machines.

Currently we use element names, although when we start to upgrade our infrastructure we will move to something like <number>.<role>.<location>.domain, so our first webserver in London, for example, will be 001.web.lon.domain

Only problem is, what if you get a LOT of servers then you'll run out. But... then you could just upgrade the servers to handle more customers, and you're good to go...
Then again, if you have good enough servers, even the biggest shared hosts could run only 20 or so servers...

There's really nothing wrong with numbers.
    Examples: us1.server.com, us2.server.com, eu1.server.com, ca1.server.com, etc

Hosts that use cutesy names are generally ridiculous. Bugs, Daffy, Elmer, and Tweety are Looney Tunes, for example -- not servers. Though using such names is not necessarily unprofessional, you'll generally find only unprofessional hosts do it.

Host: "What server are you on?"
Client: "I'm Batman" <--------------- silly, no?
