How Much Does It Cost To Build A Data Center

Our question is about how much will it cost to build a data center except the server costs.

    - Buying a 1,000 square feet building.

Costs we believe, not sure: $20,000

    - 600 square feet of regular desktop server racks.

Costs we believe, not sure: $3,000

    - Power generators and electricity costs for 1,000 servers.

Costs we believe, not sure: $5,000 power generator + $2,000 monthly electricity

    - Dedicated internet access provider such as Level 3 or Verizon.

Costs we believe, not sure: $5,000 monthly

We are serious about starting our own data center and we would like to know the average price range for the services above.

We have came up that our costs would be as above, but we are not sure if they are actually accurate in this field of business.

Best way to get accurate pricing would be going to providers (Level 3 etc) and getting quotes. As for the power generators, racks etc. same deal - get some quotes, so that way you will get some real world pricing.

Not everyone on WHT runs and owns a datacenter, yes some may have some experience in being apart of running one - but prices go up and down all the time.

You'll want at least 1 mil to start the hvac alone are around 30k each

Buying the building will be mote than 20k

probably looking 1k a month for 1gigabit line

For $33,000 ... you will be lucky if you can turn a small room into a "data center". Typical build costs are about $1000/sq ft. So you might be able to do a 5x8 room for your budget.

We were doing a research today about starting a data center and we believe we have found the right solution.

    - Renting a commercial building which includes all utilities: power and electricity, air conditioning, and Fiber Optic connection.

Then all we would need is to get would be: regular desktop server racks, power generators, extra air conditioning unit, and servers.

Thank you guys for all your help and wish us good luck starting a new data center.

If your servers each use an average of 1A @ 120V, that's about 120KW to power the servers, then add about the same amount for the cooling. In a 30 day month, that's 172,800 KWh. The per-KWh cost will vary by location, but if you're paying $0.12/KWh, you're spending over $20,000/month on power.

As far as a generator, you'll need one that can handle 300KW to support your 240KW load. You're looking at a good $50,000 on the cheap side, plus don't forget the costs for installation of the generator and fuel tanks, power distribution, and maintenance. If you want the servers to stay up while the generator turns on, you'll also need a UPS system, which is not cheap.

Most buildings are not designed for the power density that a datacenter requires. Does the building have sufficiently large cooling towers that you can connect your CRAC units to? Your costs to add sufficient cooling capacity could be quite large.

Have you considered renting a suite in an existing datacenter? They can provide you with generator-protected power and chilled water for your own CRACs, or they could install ducts from their own cooling systems. If you don't need a private suite, it's much more common to rent a caged area of certain dimensions (e.g. 20x20 feet) inside of a datacenter.

I'm thinking you're going to need to take everyones advice and maybe up your budget for this, as you will be spending well over what your budget can afford. Also, renting a suite is a good way to start and then eventually move.

Every data center will be different, you should search for providers in the area where you need the servers. The magic phrase in google would be "cage space colocation" or "private cage colocation". One provider that I am looking at charges $18/sq foot for a minimum of 8' by 8'

That would get you floorspace only. No racks, no power, no bandwidth, nothing but an empty floor surrounded by a chain link fence and a gate.

But I think, your budget is not so much high. Anyone can develop a datacenter easily. But true is this- it is not so much easy as you said above. Thank you.

Renting a 1,000 sqft suite with 1 gig and 300amps will probably cost you around $20-25,000 per month. Not sure how you plan on building a facility for 33,000...

It seems you want to fill this place with breadracks, I,d ditch that idea and use cabinets.

With cabinets you could half the space needed to be honest thus cutting down on costs (alot).

You can't build a datacenter is normal commercial office space. The power and cooling needs of a data center are completely different from the power and cooling needs of humans in a typical office. You need to run the numbers of power consumption and cooling requirements for the number of servers you plan to house in your "data center", and then run those numbers past the landlord of the commerical office building. Most commercial office buildings are simply not set up for that.

Also, check to see if the building has redundant power. A well designed data center has at least two different incoming power connections, with each power line located under a different street in case one of the streets needs to be worked on. Most office buildings are not set up that way.

In addition to your comments, the flooring/footing/slab of a traditional office space may not support the load your about to bring in to that space. (I.E. Slab Thickness and Concrete Type can have an impact on how much weight you can put in that space)

I had the oportunty to visit the biggest datacenter located in The Netherlands (Evoswitch). They had 2 servers (one for backup) each individually costed about 1.5 million dollars. (these were the backbones for the 1TB/s network) so... it just depends on how much you have to invest and how big.

You'll need a solid source of funding. The physical is only half the cost. All the premium-blended Internet and staff wages are costly. Would be a hefty insurance and power bill too.

Do you want to open your own datacenter?Well now a days colocation prices are very cheap you may want to consider colocation if your business expends a lot then you can open datacenter.I guess you are already generating enough cash to built your own datacenter.

It looks like this thread was brought out from the archives... but I'd say CW Mike's recommendation is a good indicator for comparing buying vs building your own: http://thecloudcalculator.com/calcul...ld-vs-buy.html

What do you plan on using this Data Center for? If you're just looking to rack Dedicated servers and sell them, why not start by renting racks or cages within a data center to get started. Then, as you build your client base and recurring revenue, upgrade to your own facility should you find the need.

I agree with most of the other members who have replied, your costs are grossly understated for leasing space let alone buying & building.

    Final cost of your datacenter

    Hello torrentplace.
I hope now your datacenter is up and running. I just wanted to know what is the total cost you have spent to build your datacenter at the end.
