3Ware and Areca both make good cards.

>> finding absolutely terrible performance with 3ware
3ware 9xxx series is faulty and you can go ahead and buy these if you want
your data to go under.

I've been testing the latest Adaptec 5405 cards with BBU, and have been more than satisfied with the performance. They're certainly much faster than the 3ware card I had before.

I would recommend the Adaptec 2405 unified serial controller. I know you specifically asked for sata, but for $200 or so online, its a great card. The performance is close to their new 5 series controller, but at a much lower cost. It however will only do raid 0, 1 and 10, but that's all you asked for anyway. This controller will be much faster than the older 3ware cards. It also will give you an option to upgrade to SAS drives later if you decide to go that route.

The adaptec unified serial cards run circles around the 3ware cards in terms of raw performance. I've seen 3rd party comparisons confirm this as well as my own real world experience.

We're using Adaptec 5xxx series cards now, they are streets ahead of the 3ware cards (we've used 3ware since the days of the 6000 series). They are also much nicer to work with than the Areca cards we have as well.

sure thing! we heard the same praises from customers who have tried the Adaptec 5000 series, and none of them ever want to go back to 3ware. the 1.2G dual-core hareware RAID engine on PCI-E 8-lane really shines!
the 2405 card (800mhz single-core RAID engine; PCI-E x8) mentioned by RHServices sounds interesting! it can be a good low-budget choice for hardware RAID1 card with pair of 15K SAS drives...the 5405 card is kinda too expensive to run just hardware mirroring.

I agree with the people suggesting the Adaptec 5xxx series of cards they are very well made, preform very well, and support both SATA/SAS. Also the interface for managing them is easy to use and setup. They also provide drivers and management software for a very wide range of OSs. I installed a 5805 on a SCO Unixware box (yuck) and had zero issues. They even support a wide range of back-planes.

Yes, Adaptec has recently made a good turn, since they decided to get back to what they are good at, making raid controllers, and not worrying about other product areas..
