Anyone know a word to pdf converter, preferably free?
I've been using open office. But after converting it to pdf, the links
don't work even though I hyperlinked them in MS Word.
I found one thread from last year but didn't give much info on how
to solve that rather irritating problem.

If you have a machine with WordPerfect, you can save to PDF automatically. (Which is another reason why WordPerfect truly the best word-processing software!!)

http://www.primopdf.com/ or email me the doc and i'll convert it for you.
As far as the links go, I know Adobe doesn't convert them either. I just have to go in the Adobe Acrobat PRO and make the links again.

See PDF995. I've used it numerous times, but I don't remember using it for documents with hyperlinks, so I don't know if the links will work.
Another option to look at is CutePDF.

there are a lot of free ones, unfortunately, they add their ads to your docs

Do you mean that they imbed ads in the document, or that you see ads during the conversion process (but not in the final result)? IIRC CutePDF displays ads to the person who's doing the converting (but not afterwards), while PDF995 doesn't have any ads that I remember.

I think the online PDF convertor from Adobe would work. I just gave it a try with a sample doc file and the hyperlink worked fine

Load the word file into Open Office, then export out as pdf, it works perfectly.
