Some dedicated server providers have managed services that you can purchase along with the server for a small monthly fee. You're looking at additional charge of $50-100 per month.

I'm sorry. I'm not quite sure as to what you're asking.

    If you're asking:

"How much would hiring someone cost to manage my server for me when I have a cheap unmanaged dedicated machine?"

The answer would be that it varies based on your consultant. There's people out there that charge anywhere from $20 to $150 or more per hour. Depending on the quality level, you'd generally pay more but a good price would be somewhere in the $50 to $100 per hour range for someone who understands security and can set up what you need without too much trouble.

    If you're asking:

"How much would a cheap host run?"

I've seen dedicated out there for as little as about $50 per month, but those tend to be really bad and blacklisted or simply have horrid uptime all the way to $250+ per month for higher end machines on good networks.

cheap servers will give you cheap performance expecially on "unmetered" connections - if you not ready to get something with at least average level of quality - don't waste your time, management company's will not help you.

Just be smart & take the management with the company that offers the server. You can probably work out a special arrangement if you do so.

I think you will first have to work out your budget. Once you know how much you are wiolling to spend, you can then start to create a list of suitable providers that fall within your budget. Then you should do research on those providers before signing up with one of them. Good luck.

I don't know if you were talking about actually purchasing a server for colo but that might be something to look into. You can build up a cheap 1u server for around $300-500 and colo it someplace. Then if you want to get it managed just hire a 3rd party.

You do realize.. Quality rackmount cases cost about $100 alone, right? Even if you get one WITH a power supply?

Better up that to about $6-800

I do in fact realize that. I just built two $300 Celeron 2.4 /w 512Mb of RAM and 80Gb drive in a $80 case (not rackmount) a few weeks back for testing. For that much or a little bit more you can easily build up a low end server - sure it is not going to fly but for most people it would be fine.

Some companies offer a fixed monthly rate of under $50 for server management.

Honestly, it's not worth colocating unless either your datacenter is your neighbour, or you're using good hardware. I don't see it as cost effective to colocate a celeron when providors pretty much give them away.
