    Datacenter Security

    Hello,

I was looking at a host and took at look at their network security page.

    http://uploadir.com/u/52a59n

    http://uploadir.com/u/l1vgo9

    http://uploadir.com/u/i0c9m5

My question - is it normal for datacenters to have security guards onsite 24/7 like shown in the picture? And are they needed?

    Thanks!

It's not typical to have ex military / ex police personnel for datacenter security, though it is typical to have at least one person on staff 24/7 whose job is security, signing people in and out, checking id, etc.

No, Them pictures right there are just like DPG said for show. But, datacenters do have security or someone there 24/7 most of the time.

Mine has 1-2 on guard 24/7 and its on a secure floor, where you have to have the security guard swipe their card to even let you onto the floor THEN you have to have another card to get into the room.

Some data centers, like CoreSite, contract their security out to security guard firms. It is normal to have security there including access lists, guards, man traps, biometric scanners, etc. Neat stuff

I think it's just normal to have someone look for it 24/7. It is needed because security does matter!

Yes that is phoenix nap, and yes they do have huge guys dressed to the T like that working at the entry window, i saw it first hand myself back in march. No they arent just standing around like that, but they are the first thing you see after getting in the front door. Where they are standing may be for show, but the guys sure arent. Pretty sure i even saw the guy in the picture working while i was there.

It's not uncommon at all to have 24/7 security in one shape or another. That's to protect not only the company but its customers as well.

We have 24/7 building security and 24/7 staff escorted access to our facility. No special lighting for the man trap or guys with shirts two sizes to small (yet).

To have someone sitting at the reception to check your ID: yes.

But here they usually look more like college students making an extra buck than tough guys, though.
Might differ by country and facility.

All data centers have securely locked entrances with cameras at a bare minimum.
They run the gambit from unmanned (Lights off)call to arrange escort.
    To 24X7 armed guards onsite.

Really depends on the compliance standards of the clientele hosted within.

Outsourced security = overhead. 24x7 staff is a must, but the guys from Wackenhut, Securitas, or Whelan are only going to call the police in the event of a "situation". If you have government level clients, definitely there should be security professionals onsite. But I've also learned that outsourced security professionals make plenty of mistakes because they are not familiar with policies and plain old common sense stuff when it comes to data centers. Issues I've had with outsourced security:

*Opening restricted areas during a tour while talking with potential clients and asking me if I needed access to the critical infrastructure- I couldn't refuse because it was an obvious security breach so I played along with it.

*killing power to an entire suite because they did not understand how to properly handle the alarm.

*booting visitors out of the data center at midnight because an access ticket had expired, even though there was another request for an extension in the system that had not yet been approved from the previous day.

Don't forget the liability issue should a overzealous rent-a-cop physically harm someone.

    Physical Security

Phoenix NAP's security rivals anything you would see in a highly controlled financial institution or government office. The entire facility is under the surveillance of onsite guards that all have former military or police force experience. These guards are armed with Tasers, and are present 24/7/365. Visitors cannot even enter the building without passing security checks at the front door, and every entry point within the facility features additional security checks. For instance, infrared devices are situated at the mantrap, and biometric scanners and card readers are all throughout the facility.

Additionally, the datacenter maintains its status as a Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) Validated Services Provider after Coalfire Systems, Inc., a Qualified Security Assessor (QSA), completed its independent audit.

"Not many datacenters carry the distinction of a PCI DSS validated services provider, and we are thrilled to be among those that do. Again, this validation ultimately benefits clients, as anyone that needs to meet PCI DSS for their particular operation is able to leverage the physical security measures Phoenix NAP has in place to meet that portion of their own PCI DSS audit," said McClarty.

A set of both physical and electronic security mandates designed to protect cardholder data and online consumer transactions, PCI DSS requires any business that accepts, stores, or transmits credit card payments or electronic funds to be in compliance, which is a fundamental aspect of our operations and payment processing solutions.

All high class data centers have strong security and apply the best standards. You do not need thing to look very fancy and at the end of the month to receive a bill of couple of thousands for remote hands billed at $250/hour.

Bulletproof glass, mantraps, and clueful techs on-site 24/7 handling everything from access to manual power transfers do more for me than a buff guy standing there. But yea, government likes to spend our money so there ya go.

I'm just asking they monitor the request board at least once in a 24 hour period of time lol .... But yeah, common sense should have prevailed there not to give a guy the boot while he is standing in front of his cabinet working and has had access to that cabinet all week...

PCI DSS boils down to the requirement that the facility doors have locks on them as far as the provider side is concerned.
