No doubt it is interesting.. I heard about it ~a week ago on some news site.

Personally, I would be surprised if it took off.

As would I, based on their past inovations such as their grid-computer for hire project etc.

If it doesn't take off though, where do you think this might lead the industry?

If there is one thing that sun has been good at in the past, it is giving the competition inspiration.

I think this has potential for disaster recovery information centers, that can be transported and more cost effective than the APC version.

But I don't see it being anything mainstream.

FEMA will probably puchase 10 of them and some disaster specialist company will probably get a few, but I don't see a huge demand for them, and i don't see them being put on any rooftops, the load on the roof would be extreme

(stephen) want to put one on his house... which is not a bad idea, but yes, you are right, it would not hold.

I don't know enough about datacenters to make an educated remark about where this could be used, but I would imagine some companies could use it.

I can see the army using this with all the data needed... maybe something good in iraq for temp use, etc...

    Great idea... look cool anyway.

    Haha, not on my house

My house does not have a flat roof and the internet here is too costly and unreliable to be anything good

Nice idea, till someone loads it on a flatback and drives off with it, like they tend to do with generators.

Just a guess, but they likely have security in place for that.

Itd be interesting to see inside one, and see how they work. Claiming 10 times less cost has me skeptical. I'd like to compare apples to apples and see what it has.

I've had a long career of managing projects building out very large datacenters ($25 million +) and I find it hard to believe they could be compacted that much.

Check out the photos - https://photos.sun.com/page/1183. Sun has some wild ideas about possible uses: next to wind turbines, on the rooftops of skyscrapers, in the middle of oil rig... So why not in NE-Andy's backyard? I liked this quote from Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz' blog: "one customer wanted the container to detonate if it was breached - er... perfectly doable, just not something Sun would do."

Back in January, I went with some folks from EV1Servers to check out APC's mobile data center (http://apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=318). It's basically 10 racks of servers on the back of an 18-wheeler. Lots of chrome, veeeery shiny. Robert Marsh (then EV1 CEO) was primarily interested in using it as a marketing showcase - taking it to trade shows and customer meetups in different cities, etc. Unfortunately, when loaded with gear, the APC thing would have been too heavy to drive on highways. If Robert were still in the hosting business, a bright yellow Blackbox might be on its way to Houston.
