most unmanaged / unrestricted vps ?

    Hello at at all.
Just another newbie searching for a vps hoster recommendation.

Currently i'm on a Hostgator-Shared deal and cpanel/jailshell is killing me.
Hack upon workaround upon hack only reveal even more restrictions

Lurking around on the hoster's sites recommended here i found faq entries like "we generally don't allow irc on any of our services" (not that i cared for irc )

    sooo ...

What i really want to do is run amok with exotic languages, self compiled libraries and so forth - bandwidth & performance is a concern for the far future.

What can you guys recommend - what attatched strings to look out for ?

    like Burstnet ?
    Memory: 512MB
    Bandwidth: 1000GB/MONTH
    $5.95/MONTH

seems great - wonder where the catch is ( one terra? srsly? )
i will pay as much as freedom asks in price these days

I'm in germany and pretty much distribution agnostic.
Performance is not really an issue as i'm primarily want to transfer experimental stuff from the local vm to the wild and see how it fares - show code off to buddies, potential employers - etc.

Checking the offers section for a while now - but don't really know what details to pay attention to - hence this thread.
    ( ok this was vague :/ )

Probably the memory would be the most important factor also look at the bandwidth but if you do not need much it can be secondary concern.

Most hosts don't allow IRC on their network, not just their servers. This is due to the fact that IRC attracts DDOS attacks.

Most VPS account give you complete freedom (root) to do just about anything as long as it doesn't violate the TOS. The things you mentioned should not be an problem, just pick a provider.

Having said that anything that is illegal or (can be problematic) like certain IRC use is limited by most hosts. So as long as you're not doing something illegal (for the most part) you should be fine.

If you want the freedom to swap the kernel, go for Xen or KVM over VZ or Virtuozzo. Not sure that matters much for what you're running.

As for Burst.Net, they do seem to offer a great budget VPS for sure. Not sure how they handle high resource users on them though.

Thank you guys, this is the kind of information i was looking for.

Maybe the question was wrong, weeks suprisingly appearing technical barriers turned me paranoid - i guess.

Just feared stuff like: a letter from the host with : "you keep 20 pending tcp connections per distinct peer. your account is suspended". Or random, undocumented firewall policies on the host os, that silently drop my packets. - somethin among those lines.

As it stands, i'll probably go for the lowest bidder with
    Xen or KVM
    Thanks again
