Twitter follows
In SEO term how important are twitter follows and facebook likes?
I'm thinking of some promotions, where you get some free backup space in return for a twitter follow or maybe a facebook like.
But wondering how actually useful those kind of indirect links are in terms of SEO? Or are there better ways of free promotions for SEO building...

Social networks are a great way to spread your content to different types of people that you wouldn't normally reach. But I don't think it has a great advantage for SEO. Facebook and twitter even adds rel="nofollow" to links users post. Bots/crawlers will ignore those links which means, no backlinks.

For twitter, the more followers you have and the quality of those followers affects your twitter pages PR which should help your main sites SEO a little. I would make sure that your contest required a follow and a retweet of a post with your link in it. This the maximize the SEO of the contest. I can't speak on the SEO of facebook likes since I have never looked into that before.
The better benefit of followers and likes is being able to keep your brand in front of people with message updates.

Facebook and Twitter links will help increase traffic but won't help your SEO ranking at all as all the links are 'nofollow'

I've heard that the I like feature in Facebook can make a difference for SEO. And why shouldn't it be a difference? The I like this feature is a great way to analyze if people think that the website/url is useful or not.

Hi Mike. When you say the "quality" of your followers, how exactly is this ranked? This must tie into the 'klout' feature I've heard about?
I have an idea that all of the marketing and SEO folks that follow me would be of fairly low quality, whereas real people who are followed by other real people would be of higher value? But how is this determined?
Thanks!

One thing that I have seen is offering a promo with facebook and twitter for your current clients. If they follow and retweet or like on facebook, they get a month credit, or something like that.
Not only does this make your client happy since its an easy way for them to save money, it helps drive traffic to your site, and it gives you another alternative to reach your clients in mass if needed.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I really do think twitter follows and facebook likes mean nothing in SEO. These huge networking properties do not allow passing link juices to other sites. In social media promotions, they help a lot, but in terms of ranking on search engine results pages, I think they're nothing but a contribution to a bunch of nofollow links, which does not actually contribute a lot in SEO, especially when SEO is conducted for Google rankings.

If you look a bit higher in this post, I clearly stated that Google themselves confirmed that Twitter & Facebook inbound links increase your rankings. I even gave a link with the interview that sais it all and an amazing article by SEOmoz which explains exactly how it helps your rankings.

While the links may not help your site's ranking, you need to take into account that search engines are starting to rank results from social network profiles pretty high. Just google your own name, you'll find your Facebook profile is pretty up there. Having company profiles with these sites and remaining active enhances your presence on the web and exposes you to a greater audience, and your profile, if well managed, may serve as a "gateway" for your own site, therefore attracting traffic. And since your profile increases your chances of getting hits on search results, I'd say they are very important for SEO, and I believe they will become more important in the future, even if they don't directly improve your Pr.

Twitter is excellent way to keep in touch with your visitors/customers. However I don't see how it could help in SEO except for the points that Guillo has mentioned in earlier post.

Google has said that they are going to start taking social networking, linkedin etc in account in their rankings. They are also looking to see if websites are real companies, with an about us page, has employees. They are trying to weed out "content farms". I also think this will help stop the "they are nofollow so don't count" responses that you see on every thread and forum regarding SEO.

These sites helps to get high traffic to the site. In these social networking sites links are nofollow so these are not helpful for SEO point of view.

Twitter and Facebook are not gonna help you in improving Search Engine Rankings as per my knowledge. They are the best social networks and can improve your site traffic and brand awareness
