Setting up Google Apps Email with customer start page trouble (Cname)
Cliffs:
-Domain forwarded to myspace page in cpanel
-can't set custom start page (404 error) for google apps
-tried editing cname directly
-tired using "add subdomain" within her control panel
-I have full admin access (ssh included)
-cPanel 11.22
-WHM 11.20
---------------------------
Hello,
I'm setting up google apps email for my sister's domain and am having a little trouble.
I think the problem may be because she currently has her domain forwarded to her MySpace profile which I set in cPanel.
Would it be possible somehow by modifying A records and cname records to both forward the the domain to her myspace profile and have a custom start page for google?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I tried searching:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/search...archid=5015937
but couldn't find anything worthwhile.Kimrari

According to here
http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/...40&topic=10717
Just create a CNAME, like mail.yourdomain.com to ghs.google.com

Unfortunately, it failed as I was wondering if it was because the domain is being forwarded.

What failed? What are you referring to? You're going to have to give clear details. What domain is being forwarded to where, and how.

I went back in and created start.domain.com within the control panel and it functions.
When I check the dns records for start. and www.start it is listed as an A instead of cname.
Should I leave it as an A record and point it to ghs.google.com? Because when I attempt to set it using cname it fails to an error page 404Kimrari

Kind of hard to help without giving the domain name in question.
Cname of start on the domain yourdomain.com to ghs.google.com
Should suffice as long as their are no conflicts.
When you get the 404 error, what server is the page on?

thanks Dau, the domain is heymissey.com.
When I first tried to create the cname by editing the zone file it failed
i then removed the cname from the zone file and created the sub domain within the control panel and it resolves"
http://start.heymissey.com
with the above subdomain created in cpanel the below was added to the zone file (automatically by cpanel):
start IN A 72.52.204.176
I tried to then add a cname of:
start IN cname ghs.google.com
but I encounter an error.
Should I remove the subdomain via cpanel and do something completely different?Kimrari

You have a conflict, you can't have a A record for start to go to your server, than a CNAME for start going to google. There was no need to create a subdomain in cPanel. Remove the subdomain from cPanel, leave the "start IN cname ghs.google.com" in for your domain.

just made the change and now i have a generic "apache success page"
hopefully it is just a propagation issue. everything on the google apps side is set up correctly and is "Active"

No problem, to check the status of your CNAME.

There's also a step for domain verification which I wasn't aware of.Last edited by cloudrck; 05-15-2008 at 04:48 PM.

Glad you got it setup. Though I haven't used cPanel in some time, I thought I remembered that cPanel added the dot at the end.
Anyways...
