DB Load Balancing
Anyone have any experience with load balancing a database server? I have a general idea on how to load balance a web server but not sure how to do it with a db. How will the database data be synchronised across two+ boxes? Seems like a complex proposition to me. Please share know your experiences with us. I don't want to be in over my head.
I will be using SQL Server on a Dual Xeon 3.0 box that can use as much as 16GIGs of memory. How bad will traffic need to be before that box gets maxed out?

That depends on whats ur database and ur db config.
Generally, the traffic will have to be big 1M uniques ??
but really cant say,, depends on ur db config / how well writen are your scripts.
i know some big sites use just one big big server like urs with 10GB+ memory and 2 or 4 fast cpus.
get someone to make u serious sql setup - use query caching,...
get someone to fix ur scripts and optimize the databases --
on box with 4 xeons and 16gig memory u'll have to be damn big to have problems.Every line ends in rhyme

from my experience, with 2xXeon/4Gig pure db server, you should not have any trouble serving 0.5M, maybe 1M daily uniques.... as i said..depends heavily...

hm, isnt 4GB the max you can use on x86 based systems? but, i recommend making sure EVERYTHING is optimized, read up on mysql indexes. Also, what kind of hard drives will the machine have?

It sounds like you're looking for is what is generally called an active-active cluster in MS SQL parlance. I suggest searching on Google or MSDN to get an idea of what's involved.

4 GB is the limit on 32-bit systems, IIRC.
