Building a Server
I'm planning on building a server soon and co-locating it at a datacenter near my home. I have one issue though. I am planning on getting this motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131186
with this case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811152087
Now I'm worried about the motherboard size because the motherboard is 9.6"x9.6" and the case size for the motherboard is 12"x9.7". Will this be an issue? Is that motherboard and case any good? I'm planning on getting this cpu with it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115031
Is the cooling in the case enough? Will my power supply be able to support my server? Thanks .Rageki Web Hosting Solutions - Canada & United States Web Hosting

I think this would be better off in Computers and Peripherals.

The chassis is ok. However, you will get some minor issues with that motherboard (audio ports, memory slots/cooling). I would recommend to use ATX server motherboard or buy a barebone system.

Do you know of any better motherboards around the $130 and lower range? I don't wanna end up spending majority of the money on the motherboard. I already have this harddrive in mind: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136062
I just have to see what motherboard to get them start searching for memory. I plan on getting about 2gb of memory and the total of my server to be around $400?Last edited by Rageki-John; 02-13-2008 at 02:20 AM.

Question is will a microatx motherboard fit in an atx case. Google says they 'usually' do.
The problem you will run into is the heatsink that comes with that cpu. It probably wont fit. You will have to either look at cpus that come with a 1u heatsink or get one separately.

Nothing wrong with the case, why not find out from SuperMicro what motherboards they put in those cases and then get the appropriate SuperMicro motherboard?

The only problem is the cpu. I'm not sure whether the heatsink will fit because a 1U case is pretty small.
Edit: I just checked the Xeon's on newegg and they are totally out of my price range but I checked the Dual Core Opteron's made by AMD and they are way cheaper. They are also under the server category so I guess I won't have a problem for sure. Another good thing is that it's about $20 or $30 cheaper so I like that but I'm not sure how far the performance is between this Core 2 Duo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115031 and this Dual Core Opteron: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819105017Last edited by Rageki-John; 02-13-2008 at 07:42 PM.

Alright after much research I have come to the conclusion that I currently don't have the money to get a 1U server because they may save space but in the end the difference between the cost of parts from the tower and the 1U server are way too far apart.
Here are my new specs for my tower. Please comment on them whether it's good or not .
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811154050
Harddrive:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136062
Memory:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820178134
Motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128076
CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115031
Total Price w/ Shipping and Tax: $366.83
I'm not sure whether 2gb of ram(which is the max for my motherboard) will be enough for my server. I'm also not sure about the power supply that comes with the case which provides 300w of power. Also if I were to fill this server with about 100 user accounts and let's assume that majority of them have quite some visitors, would my server be able to handle this load?Last edited by Rageki-John; 02-14-2008 at 09:34 PM.
