Looking to purchase 1U Xeon Servers for co-location
We are looking to add-on a Xeon 1U server to our co-location rack. The company we had been buying servers from went belly-up. We had a killer deal there, so I am reaching out to you guys to help point me towards your favorite server retailer. I am looking to buy only 1Us, only Xeons, but with no other real requirements (it will probably be 2x120GB IDE w/out RAID and only 512MB RAM to start). I am not looking for offers from companies, but rather recommendations from non-biased WHT members. I had been checking out asaservers.com. Anyone bought from them before? I am mostly interested in budget, quality, and reputation of the dealer.. this machine does not have to be made out of gold. Let me know where you get your servers and possibly your experience with the dealer.

I know I will get flamed for it but I would reccomend dell for intel chips
Ive seen the 1u dual xeon for as low as 1500 you just have to keep checking it sometimes they lower the price pretty drastically and no one can really complete with next day onsite hardware repairs and they WILL go to a datacenter and not just your buissness address. Becomes very worth it if it saves you a trip

I talked to a rep at asaservers and worked out a nice deal with them. I think I will go with them unless someone comes up with something better. I'd like to know if others have bought from asaservers.com.

Sure you want to go 1u cases for a dual xeon? Pretty limited airflow/ventiliation, imo. Go for a 2u case, imo. Ok, less servers per rack, but better ventilation for each server.

Yeah supermicro should be fine. They are a pretty large company and I think they OEM for dell.

We ended up going with ASAservers. Here is what we got for only $1287:
CPU 1 INTEL XEON 2.4GHZ 512K 533FSB S604(BX80532KE2400D)
CPU 2 None
MEMORY 512MB(2X 256MB) DDR PC2100 ECC REGISTERED LOW-...(2MD21ERLS_X2)
HARD DISK 1 IDE 120GB 7200 RPM ATA133(I-012-07-3)
HARD DISK 2 IDE 120GB 7200 RPM ATA133(I-012-07-3)
RAID Controller (Choose only if you don't need additional NIC) None
CD/FDD SLIM CDROM 24X(CDSLIM)
NETWORK CARD (Dual 10/100/1000 NICs onboard) None
KEY BOARD None
MOUSE None
OPERATING SYSTEM LINUX 0/S (SPECIFIY FLAVOR AND VERSION)(LINUX)
Co-Location None
Warranty Basic Depot Warranty(Basic_Warranty)
MOTHER BOARD Intel E7501 Chipset Dual Xeon
CASE 1U Rackmount Case for SUPERMICRO 613A-Xi. 350W power.
As you can see, $1287 includes one out of two possible 2.4GHz CPUs, 512MB memory, 2 120GB ATA HDs, and a few other features. Not a bad deal at all IMO.
I assume we would just run an SMP kernel to begin with and the addition of the 2nd CPU would just be plug-it-in-and-go, right?
I will let you guys know how my experience with ASAservers goes. So far so good.H4Y Technologies LLC .. Since 2001!!

I would definately reccomend a Dell PowerEdge 1750 for any Xeon application. Yes, they're expensive, but you shall drool when the package arrives

You can maybe get two super micro servers with the same specs of a Dell for a little more money.

Or you can get a Dell dude. Don't ask -- just get one, then you'll understand
Its kinda like getting a BMW 5 Series as opposed to a Camaro.

I also bought a server with them. P4 2.4ghz 800fsb, 512 ECC ram, 8channel disk controller, 6x80gb hd's, 2u w/ 6hotswap drives, and it came out to something around, a little more than what you paid for.

I know how good their support is though. Comparing Dell servers and Supermicro servers with cars is like apples and oranges
Since supermicro is a dell OEM is like buying a OEM CPU instead of retail. You save money by not getting both fancy box and manuals and DELL branding in this case.Last edited by ClusterMania; 11-21-2003 at 07:46 AM.
