1&1.com Raising Their Prices
I just got this in my email inbox:
1&1 Internet Inc. appreciates your business, and we hope that you are
happy with our services.
We are writing today to inform you that it has become necessary for us
to increase the rates for some domains due to price increases by the major
domain registries.
In order to stay competitive and continue to offer you excellent services,
we have made changes to our pricing structure in accordance with the
changes in the industry.
For domain renewals and orders as of November 2, 2007, the following domain
rates will apply:
* .com, .net, .us, .org, .info, .name domains will be increased from $5.99
to $6.99 per year
1&1 is committed to offering very competitive prices and professional
services in the domain environment and we hope to continue to meet and
surpass your service expectations.
PLEASE NOTE:
This price change does not affect free domains included in your package.

What, everyone else lowered them since the ICANN fee was lowered / partially refunded. Unworthy excuse!

My guess is that they are mad that people are using their domain service without purchasing any additional services. While they may have been their door buster, it may not have had the conversion they wanted on their other products.
