Need an unmetered 1Gbps dedicated server for streaming

    Hello everyone,

    I'm looking for your help!

I have an streaming company and we're evaluating a huge project, where we'll be having about 5,000 concurrent users as average (audio at 128kbps).

So if my calculations are correct 5,000 users at 128kbps it's like 640Mbps and about 1,600TB / month

So i'm looking for a dedicated server with 1gbps unmetered and with unlimited bandwidth.

Do you guys have any recommendations for this??

    Thanks a lot!

    Hello,

What software will you use to stream? What about using 3-4 servers such that you can have some fault tolerance, if you have just a single server and it goes down for any reason, all your 5,000 users will tune in elsewhere,

    Hello!
    I'll be using shoutcast.
Yes, probably i'll need about 3 to 4 servers... but at this point i'm really concerned about the bandwidth...

I would put 100 TB on the list. You can upgrade to an unmetered 1 Gbps port for an extra $400/mo. Base price is then $600/mo for their entry server:

I was just chating with them but they have a 324TB / month limit for their unmetered plan...

Really? Did not know that. Good to know.

You might talk to Gigenet. They were running a 100 TB deal, though I'm not sure if they have an upgrade option:

I'll have a look around and see if I turn up anything else - I don't see many offers for such high bandwidth allocations.

324tb is the Max roughly that a 1Gbps port can push.

You're right, because I'm dumb and can't do math.
I knew that a 10 Mbps port was 3.3 TB, but it didn't register that that means 1 Gbps = 333 TB

I've never heard of these guys at all or read any reviews, but 10 Gbps is what you need:

I'm a little bit confused then...
    Consider 5,000 users at 128kbps, connected 24/7.
    5,000 x 128Kbps = 625Mbps so with 1Gbps you'll cover it.
But if they keep connected 24/7, then it's 1,620 TB / month.
Why do you say that a 1Gbps limit is 333 TB ?

    Thanks for your help!

    OH

You didn't convert from bits to bytes.

    128 * 5000 = 640000 Kbps = 640 Mbps = 80 MBps

    80 * 60 seconds * 60 minutes * 24 hours * 30 days = 207360000 MB

    Which is 207 TB

    128 Kb/s = 16 kB/s
    16 kB/s = 0.125 Mb/s
    0.125 Mb/s = 0.015 MB/s
    0.015 MB/s x 5000 = +- 80 MB/s = 640 Mb/s & 640 Mbps... = 1 Gbps connectin must working

    That's correct.
So what I need is 1Gbps unmetered and unlimited transfer (or 324TB / month limit).

    Any more suggestions ?

I'm already talking with 100TB.com and GigaNet.

You could try emailing WebNX - they have good pricing on quality hardware, though they might quote you an arm and a leg for that much bandwidth.

They resell for a number of places but from what I've read they are pretty good.

I believe Wizzsolutions utilize FDC Servers (amongst others).

When choosing a 100TB server, make sure the provider permits live streaming as you will find many do not allow this.

Suggest that you go with at least two servers in two different data centers. Maybe one in Chicago, one in Ashburn or New York.

You dont need much cpu for shoutcast audio streaming.

We have been disappointed with FDC (and resellers) Denver performance for streaming.

If you're expecting to use shoutcast you're looking at 5+ servers not one.

In terms of recommendations - what's your budget for this solution? What level of support do you need? Can you/your team manage the servers yourselves, or do you need some hand holding? Do you need 24/7 support? Is uptime and performance critical to the business, or can you afford to be offline for an hour or two every couple of months (ie. hosting at some of the "budget" providers)? Do you want to setup a cluster with load balancing? Etc. etc.
    Thanks,

Packet loss and poor performance on peak hours - 2-8 Mbps max on 1 Gbps line.
