    Tips for Train Travel?

    Hey All,
On Wednesday, I will be embarking on a 23 hour train ride to commute to a B B G N staff meeting. I have always wanted to take a train so I opted to do it rather then take a plane. I have however never taken a train before, any tips?

Ironically I may be sitting next to my step brother part of the way at least.

If you haven't already booked, go with the Business Class travel. If you've already booked, see if you can upgrade. Business Class is sooooooooo worth it.

It was not offered on my Train or I would have done it. I will see if there are any upgrades when I get to the office.

I recently traveled from Boston to San Antonio on a sleeper with a private room. Had a blast!

    Just For A New Experience
Visit Russia or Ukraine and do an over nighter on one of their trains...after that experience you'll think any train ride on one of our trains here in the US is like flying first class on a 747.

Enjoy your ride and report back to us and let us know how it was for you.

Err, 23 hours? Sounds terrible, I would rather fly

The max time I can take sitting in trains is about 4-5 hours (either on regular Amtrak or Acela, business class or first class.) A private room would be a different story though.

Have something to do for at least half that time! Otherwise it will be a long boring ride....

    Amtrak?

If so, pack good food. The Amtrak food is pretty iffy in terms of taste and it's also high-priced (not a great combo!).

But Amtrak train rides still tend to be a lot of fun.

Better hope the coverage is good and batteries charged up, I can't imagine you being WHT-less for 2 hours, let alone 23.

The last couple of times I took a train, the toilets we're out of order, so might want to take a bucket

Cancel the ticket and get the plane.

    Makes a lot more sense.

I think that sort of cold turkey could do him some real damage! That is a long train ride! I would rather drive! Just for the scenery!

    Enjoy your ride !

Agreed. Who in their right mind would take a train for 23 hours if there is an airport nearby? That's madness. None the less, get a sleeper car and get wasted... and find a better employer who will spring for a plane ticket.

Wait, I can do without the restroom, but no WHT for 23 hours... I am scared.

No, I need to blow about 5 weeks of PTO from work, so the train is the best way for me to sit back and unwind. The cost of the tickets were almost identical, in fact the airport is closer to me.

Hey, it's Amtrak right? The one I take from Boston to NY has wi-fi both on the regular Amtrak and Acela, including power outlets in every seat.

Yes, I think he was referring to being in the air without WHT.

You like the NY - Boston train? I just drive it...significantly cheaper.

I prefer the train usually after a long day of work--I can either sleep on it, or do more work! If you book a week or two in advance, train is as cheap as $65 one-way (or $99 on Acela.) Driving is fine, but the train is very predictable in terms of getting there in exactly 4 hours.

I am taking the Amtrak, its $160 each way. I am traveling from Miami to Washington DC. It was about the same thing for the plane as well. I decided on the Train due to the increased legroom, no airport headache and I need some personal time to unwind.
