I never said they are a bad host, I just dont want to host with them.

Only fanboys talk of the "SL way". There are numerous other excellent providers out there.
Yes, there are lots of providers. You just need to find the one that is good for you.

Yes, a LOT of SL customers (including myself) are fanboys. I have been with SL for many years now and know lots of the staff on a personal level. That always changes things.

SL is one of the best providers and I hope they continue to be for a long time.

Telx is it's own thing, they are going public any day now and GI will use their IPO as their exit.

Just wondering, by "good thing", do you mean an improvement or maintaining status quo?

I think all this talk about anyone coming out of this unharmed is total butt covering , can anyone remember any super large transactions in recent memory that has made this community happy? There have been quite a few total debacles , and when its all said and done , no clients of the companies involved can be sure they will be happy with the new management. The new ownership has to have a plan to pump up revenues , and decrease costs , and most time the 2 do not make for a better client experience. Take Layeredtech for example they used to be super active here on these forums , now they seem to be serving an entirely different market. So clients of the companies involved should be prepared for anything and I mean ANYTHING , new ownership means just that whoever is the CEO is not necessarily the one making the real decisions. The guys with the cash ultimately make the call.

    Just my $.02

P.S. If the status quo was what the stockholders of SL wanted they wouldn't have done this deal

I'm really wondering what's going to happen.

I've heard that SL will be making an announcement quite soon with regards to what ever is happening.

I've got a gut feeling that something big is about to happen that's going to go in a completely different direction from what anyone is anticipating.

I wouldn't worry, of course they will ensure for a smooth transition. The real question I guess is long term. If there are changes it will be done further down the road, this should be expected. But again, no point dreaming about what if. What if this didn't happen? Things like this happen because they must happen. I have no idea how the business side of this works in this kind of scale, but I wonder how comparable it will be to the EV1Servers + TP years back. Remember that at this point it is all speculation until it is clarified in detail!

    This has already been mentioned...

Lance will stay on as CEO. The SoftLayer brand will be the parent / senior brand as it is growing and has (or at least is perceived to have) better technology.

Whether ThePlanet's management services (bearing in mind they bought Touch Support) are integrated to give SoftLayer a better managed presence remains to be seen. This would no doubt piss off a lot of the SL resellers who add value to SL servers by managing them.

This was totally predictable in my opinion. Maybe not exactly the Softlayer/ThePlanet buyout but behind the screens a lot is happening.
I predict that the near future will show many of these mergers or buyouts. Did we not hear a few months ago from a leaked Email that one of the better known providers in webhostingtalk has cashflow problems? they not unique and certainly not alone.

Many dedicated server providers are loaded with massive debts and eager to sellout. Some are started up just with that strategy in mind. Do not be surprised, since a lot of buyouts and mergers are on the way.

A merger will make them a competitor closer to 1and1.com
    As per http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/a...t-web-servers/
1and1 has 70000 servers and TP has 48500 with SL at 21000
    48500+21000 = 69500
They are just above OVH and short off 500 servers from 1and1

Lance posted it - more or less word by word - on the softlayer forums in a statement.

To say the least. They are also not accurate, additionally they are missing many dedicated server providers that are between the 10 000 and 100 000 servers.

Wow. 2500 servers/mo. Regardless of the power density they're putting in per rack that's a big chunk of data center there.

Nice to know this is a race to how many servers you can say you host . If Softlayer ends up merging, that's not exactly a comforting statement about where their quality is going.

I believe they have several data centers. Still adding so many servers per month also increases debt very rapidly. Just think about that as well
