Strange layeredtech specials.
Look at the pricing of these specials from layeredtech:
AMD Sempron 2600
512MB RAM
80GB Hard Drive
Bandwidth: 1500GB
Addresses: 8 (5 Usable)
$17.95 Month | $495 Set Up
INTEL P4 2.8GHz
1024MB RAM
160GB Hard Drive
Bandwidth: 1500GB
Addresses: 8 (5 Usable)
$29.95/month | $595 Set Up
INTEL Xeon 2.8GHz
1024MB RAM
2 x 160GB Hard Drives
Bandwidth: 2000GB
Addresses: 8 (5 Usable)
$59.95/month | $795 Set Up
Have you ever seen pricing like that?
Would anyone do that? Would make me nervous as hell they could find some reason to cancel my account after a few months because I "violated the terms" or some bs.

I doubt LT would use such bs reasons to close your account. From what I can see you are paying for the actual server and then just paying for the bandwidth every month. I would make sure to read up on their TOS/AUP before making an accounts, as anyone should when buying any service, so you don't get any surprises later.

Why do you want to violate their terms? if you don't violate,they can't find any reason to cancel your server.

Doesnt this look like they may have some serious financial issues to offer something like this. I mean this is a pretty strange idea, it will definitely pay off the server and then some for each of those packages, but they are almost virtually cutting themselves out of future profit.
Very strange,

nothing is strange here - they just want to find a loosers to purchase old rubbish servers in "As it is" condition - very normal thing to do for big player like LT You can purchase it and after your hdd is crashed - they will make more money to replace it... This is just marketing strategy to get rid of rubbish hardware

That is a pretty dumb way to do it. In my opinion at least. Its just a very funky pricing scheme that doesnt seem like the best choice the could have found for that hardware. Just an opinion though.

Don't be so sure. They yanked one of our servers offline with a totally unsubstantiated abuse complaint. When asked for proof, they gave us nothing even remotely close to real information. Their abuse department has been notorious for being...well...abusive to their clients in the past.

Must admit, that's an odd selling technique, pay for the server, then just pay for your bandwidth/power, never seen it before with anyone else!

Only if people hang onto those servers indefinitely. Those configurations aren't exactly future-proof, and all you need is to have your forum/site/whatever gain popularity and you're going to be looking at an upgrade.
Statistically I think LT comes out ahead on these deals. Clearly they think they will and that's why they offered it.Eric Spaeth

Yeah, it's like a local sushi-bar "Sunday Special" - rolls made out of left-overs over week Nice, tasty rolls - "Cheif Specials" - but you don't ask what is that You just eat them because they are $4/roll instead of $12 usual...
Same kind of things in any industry - including servers...

I would definately beware of LT's abuse department.
They questioned me for having a ddos related domain name and thought it was linked to an attack I received (I have the ticket logs somewhere, I will have to find them and post to the forum). The domain was actually being used for IRC, however it did receive an attack and they tried blaming me for sending one based off of the domain name.
This was about 2 years ago so, I'm not sure what their support/abuse departments are like today.
Edit: Oh, and I never did get to backup my files from it because of filing a complaint with the BBB, they ceased all communication with me.Steven McIntire

What struck me as BIZARRE was the whole "cream in your twinkie" promo theme. It sounds like porn! Not that I am into porn but I've run servers long enough to know what the heck twinkies and cream refer to!! Yuk!!!
The pricing scheme is similar to what GNAX is doing with their NetDepot line. They too collect that initial chunk of money up-front with the high set-up fee, so the customer can "buy down" the monthly price.
Just my 2¢ worth.

Been with LT for over two years myself without any issues, but maybe that's just me. That aside math may have the answer here:
Sempron 2600 from LT (with 1GB of ram and 2x 80GB drives) is $99/mo. Let's assume that the current version would go for about $80/mo with free setup.
We end up with two nifty equations (remember high school algebra?)
80x = 17.95x + 495
0 = 17.95x - 80x + 495
0 = -62.05x + 495
-495 = -62.05x
7.97 = x
So if you plan on having the machine for 8+ months, you are going to save money by going with the large setup fee.
With the P4 we get:
99x + 19 = 29.95x + 595
99x = 29.95x + 576
69.05x = 576
x = 8.34 months
Just like taking a risk on overselling their bandwidth, LT is taking a gamble that you will keep this machine for less than the break even point.█ Mike from Zoodia.com
