What is your Favorite Operating System?

we have a debate in the office about the 3 big names in operating systems. Linux, Windows, and Mac. i truly enjoy Ububtu, a very versatile OS that is great against viruses, amazing performance, and fully modifiable down to the source code. Overall its great and FREE!

Mac OS X for basically everything, I've got a Mac Pro with 12 gigs of RAM and two screens. I even like OS X Server for an enterprise environment (file storage, users, policies, etc...) however for Web Hosting systems I like Linux.

Thumbs down for Mac OS X. There are many reasons, but some of the most important are:

    • It doesn't have any source code editor like Notepad ++.
    • Many applications doesn't come in Mac OS X platform like the one I mentioned above.
    • Definitely, games.

I use mac just for iPhone app development, nothing more than that. I wouldn't have purchased it if iPhone SDK was released for Windows.

When we look for an operating system, we look for everything in it like development, entertainment, etc.

So, in my opinion, Windows wins here.

There are some source code editors, I'm trying Aquamacs now. Many *Windows* applications don't come on the Mac, of course. There are often applications (paid or free) that accomplish the same task. I haven't found any application that I used with Windows that I couldn't replace in OS X. The Steam platform is starting to release on the mac, and some other games are as well - although I'm not a gamer so I can't comment too much on the availability of games. OS X suits me perfectly (I love "Terminal" - I can cluster ssh, ssh, etc without needing another application like PuTTY)

Linux - Kubuntu flavour for desktop / laptop
Linux - Xubuntu flavour for local file server
    Linux - CentOS for servers
I use Snow Leopard on Mac Mini for Ipad work, and I find it "limited".
Windows - Nah, I have no use for that - if it becomes free and open source and come with app that allows for managing / installing / updating all software, it might be worth a second look.
    Gaming - PS3, X360, Wii

My favorites are CentOS for hosting and Windows 7 for everyday use. Both have proven incredibly reliable and stable.

Ubuntu seems to be the most popular choice among everyone here. But I do agree with most of you about Windows 7 for games. Another downside to using Ubuntu is the fact that I cannot watch my Netflix movies, but that is not Ubuntu’s fault, I blame Netflix and Microsoft Silverlight, for not supporting Linux. >=(

Ubuntu for me! I've been MS free for nearly 3 years now.....since 8.04 was released!

I stick a new version on every six months, and the old version is still running as well as the day I installed it!

I've found I get twice as much done in half the time, with zero maintenance!

And it's free! What more can you ask for in an OS?
