HawkHost or StableHost
Hello there..
after some research done i'm considering to choose btween this 2 web host..
the package available does met my requirement..
i'm in the process to make a community website using Joomla..
i have 2 question:
1) in ur opinion which webhost is better?from ur experience or maybe from what u know..
2) usually, how much storage needed for a community site+forum+blog+download area for lectures. FYI, the site is for medical student community and its about 400-500 people will be participating in this site and the number will increase every year.
so how much bandwith and storage is stable for a small community like this?

I have no experience with StableHost, however I have and am hosted by HawkHost with nothing but positives so far, so my pick would have to go with HH on this one.
As for your site, any of HH's Shared plans should get you started and the ability to upgrade as your site usage increases should be plentiful as ou go along.

A lot has changed since then, but I'm curious what went wrong. We'd like to make sure it's corrected and perhaps make it up to you. If you can, just PM me your email address and I'll search our ticket db.

I've heard many good things about HawkHost, and their representatives are very active here in WHT. I think StableHost has a few reviews here in WHT, also.

I went with HH a few weeks back and I've been very happy so far. My sites load extremely quickly. Didn't have any issues so far so haven't gotten a chance to contact and try out their support, but from what I hear from others on this forum, it's great.

I cannot foresee many issues to start off with. One of them being more activity depending on which services offered may increase certain tasks and options but they will surely notify you if anything occurs, as should with any host as it is unavoidable. And their packages available will allow you to increase yourself as you feel the need as well.
What domain(s) you host with them as per verification measures? Submit through the Report button on your post as well if wish to keep all secrets.

Sorry, wasn't 100% sure on the procedure of how you guys look up domains and thought any domain would do.
Another one submitted. Roughly 2.5 weeks I've been with HH. Maybe that's not exactly a "few" weeks either but I was on vacation last week so felt like it has been a while.
Apologies to the OP for taking up so much of this thread. But it's great how thorough WHT is to ensure legit reviews/pro-comments.

I am a current customer of HawkHost. I have never used StableHost as a web hosting company, although I did consider StableHost, previously, when looking for a web hosting company for someone else. The reason that I did not choose them can be found here:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=756110
Specifically, it was the part of that posting that said, "But, 40GB of Hard Drive Storage and 300GB of Transfer for $5.95 per month seemed to indicate overselling." Looking at StableHost's website, today, it would seem to me that they have updated their respective shared hosting plans' offerings since that time when I considered them.
I have commented about HawkHost in these forums several different times, recently, if you want to refer to those postings. In a nutshell, though, my overall experience to date with HawkHost as a customer of theirs has been overwhelmingly positive.
My three most recent support tickets submitted to HawkHost have been:
Support Ticket # MYQ-603407
Ticket Created: 06 Feb 2010 12:26 PM
HawkHost's Tony Baird responded at: 06 Feb 2010 12:41 PM
Priority: Medium
Department: Sales
Issue: I was browsing HawkHost's Acceptable Use Policy on a whim, and noticed that the shoutbox that I was using on my site was not allowed under that policy. So, I reported it to HawkHost, and inquired about whether there were other options that HawkHost could suggest, aside from changing web hosting companies.
Support Ticket # UUD-524113
Ticket Created: Created on 05 Feb 2010 09:25 AM
HawkHost's Cody Robertson responded at: 05 Feb 2010 09:43 AM
Priority: Critical
Department: Support
Issue: My website would not load via either my web browser or FTP. The problem was a DDoS attack on the server that my site was hosted on. The problem as resolved on 05 Feb 2010 09:54 AM.
Support Ticket # ENG-107468
Ticket Created: 19 Dec 2009 11:54 AM
HawkHost's Brian Farrell responded at: 19 Dec 2009 11:57 AM
Priority: Medium
Department: Support
Issue: I was interested in purchasing an additional domain name, and I wanted to know if I needed to purchase a new web hosting account to use that new domain name, or if I could use it with my current web hosting plan.
One thing to keep in mind about support tickets and support issues, regardless of which web hosting companies that you are considering, is that the amount of time to respond or the issue, itself, are far less important as stand alone considerations than the gravity of the issued dealt with within the context of the time frame that it took to resolve the question or problem faced.
The most serious issue in the three most recent support tickets that I opened with HawkHost was, in my considered opinion, the DDoS attack. The DDoS attack in question impacted both myself and HawkHost, but neither myself nor HawkHost were the ones who created the problem in the first place, to the best of my knowledge. Thus, a problem external to the otherwise normal "I have a website hosted by HawkHost" scenario is probably worthy of me being patient with my webhost. As long as there continue to exist DDoS attacks upon web hosting companies' servers, then this sort of issue will remain a fact of life for potentially any web site hosted by any web hosting company, no matter which one that you choose.
If you don't have any idea how much disk space and bandwidth that you will need, then I recommend that you start your research with each web hosting company that you consider on their lowest priced, entry level shared hosting plan. Why? Because, you can always upgrade later if you need to, even if it a day or a week after you initially sign on with them. Why waste money, unnecessarily, if you don't have to? Unless you just want to, of course.
One bad habit that virtually every web hosting company that I encounter has apparently embraced is that they don't really tend to address the actual needs of potential customers browsing their websites and advertising. By and large, they are a geared towards selling you clumps and chunks of this or that, and they certainly have no qualms about selling you more than you need - regardless of whether they oversell like crazy or whether they demonize overselling every chance that they get.
If you want to feel better later on about which of the two web hosting companies under consideration by you here, StableHost or HawkHost, you choose, then after you make a decision on which of those two web hosts to go with, take a few minutes more to explore an additional web hosting company or two, just to give you a better idea of what's available out there, and also to give you a little additional peace of mind, if whichever of the two that you choose ends up being a bad choice later on down the line.Last edited by CharlesM; 02-11-2010 at 11:33 AM. The majority of web hosts don't own a data center.. to own and build a data center requires a very large amount of work and money. Most larger providers without a doubt with closely with numerous data centers (HostGator and ThePlanet for instance) and likely rent out numerous floors as needed, though they also don't have their own data center.
The answer is no; a web host owning a data center isn't important.

That just depends. On paper and in theory, it would seem like the answer would be a resounding "Yes!"
However, it is doubtful that most web hosting companies, even some of those with the best reputations amongst their client base, own their own datacenter.
Then, too, what do you consider a "datacenter" to be?
Furthermore, there is nothing that guarantees that a company that owns its own datacenter won't ever turn out to be a bad web host.
For comparison's sake, how many automobile dealers own their own automobile factories? Or, for that matter, how many datacenters run their servers on software created or owned by other companies?
Whether a web hosting company also owns their own datacenters or not is largely a non-issue to me, when choosing a web hosting company to go with or to recommend to someone else.
