I'd add opt-in email broadcasting and social networking - for example have your blog posts automatically post to your Twitter account. And possibly create some microsites to promote programs not easily integrated into your main site - like customer loyalty programs.

When you break it down to basics everything comes down to traffic. But in order to get traffic you need to split the exercise into traffic from Google and all the other traffic. This distinction is important because there is stuff that you do for traffic that is not necessarily a particularly good strategy if you are tying to get your site to rank on Google. For example link exchanges should be no followed. They are no good for back links but can be used to generate niche targeted traffic and you have to understand what you are doing to get the results you want.

Don't understand. Why are free directory submissions a waste and payed OK? I have always understood that paid links brings on an attack of the vapors which in some cases can be terminal? I use the free directories on a daily basis and they work like a dream. That is until they go paid. Have you ever done any link building? Why do you want to wait and pay for links which you can get for free if you are quick on your feet?

Just don't spam, that its, don't send bulk unsolicited e-mails
without permission to people with whom you are having no
relationship as many countries have anti-spam laws.

Besides that Creating a Site Map, passing comments on the other business related blogs can also bring lot of traffic.

Would have to agree to disagree on opt-in email marketing. If done properly, it can and is being utilized very successfully.

I found that the social media marketing sites like twitter, facebook, etc have been helpful in getting your site crawled.

Yes, I agree that social bookmarks like Digg can provide websites with a lot of traffic especially when interesting news are submitted.

They wont go into junk or spam unless you use spammy words. There're very good email- softwares out there which you can get for free and which helps you in writing a mail that'll not go to spam/junk.
