WHMCS Custom Fields and Merge Fields?

I have searched, read wikis, and posted on WHMCS forums, but can't find an answer, so I'll try here.

I set up a custom field in WHMCS called "License Number" to a product. This field must be filled during the ordering process. It works fine, and the field is in the client's profile, BUT...

In their profile, there is no name to the field. The field is there and filled with the correct info, but it has no name next to it.

Also, I need to include this custom field in welcome emails and such, but I can't figure out how to make custom "Merge Fields" work for the custom field.

    Any ideas?

    update:

I couldn't edit, but to correct the above, I can see the custom field in the admin summary, and in the "my details" page in the client area, but the field are NOT filled, and there is no label for the box. It's just an empty field.

There are 2 different places to create custom fields. I used a PRODUCT custom field when I should have used a CLIENT custom field. After changing this, everything worked out how I wanted it.
