80% of my traffic comes from Google!! Is this true for anyone else?
I can't believe it... I have great rankings on msn live search and altavista and yahoo, but this does not count for me.. I am number one for some keywords but not with google.

The traffic comes from google because your visitors does not visit other search engines to get to you. Its simple as that.

I doubt people would use other search engines apart from google and yahoo.

You know google is the best SE . I think around 70% is google and other 30% are shared by other SE like yahoo msn etc....

It the rankings are similar for all search engines, it is not surprise to see more visitors from google than others, since google takes up majority share of the search market.

So to get more traffic, the only answer is seo for google!!
But another question: how did I rank so well on other search engines and not so on google?
    Google is the one..

I get a TON of traffic from Google, but through tracking it seems that literally NONE of the hits (hundreds atleast) lead to any purchase:/

There are several points to be made about search engines as related to the inhabitants of WHT.

First, tech types tend to be heavier users of google than other search engines, while more casual users often just use whatever is setup in their browsers.

Second, tech types are hard to convert, but for tech markets, conversions will be better from google referrals than the other search engines.

Meanwhile, for sellers of almost everything else, AOL, YAHOO, and MSN LIVE beat the pants off of GOOGLE for conversions.

As for "quality of search results", MSN LIVE seems to be much more to the point than GOOGLE right now.

Maybe the problem is with your site, which is not set up correctly to walk visitors throughout the purchasing process...

Optimizing site for google matters the most as google has the highest market share. keyword research is important to estimate the traffic for potential terms, try the google keyword suggestion tool.

Many SPAM bots dig Google for odd combinations of niche keywords and then start looking for guestbooks, comment forums, etc to try and plant links with.

If you have a PR4+, you'll get 'singled out' for this type of probing. I wrote a blog post about it, rather than risk mod wrath I'll post it here rather than linking:

Holy Viagra Batman! In the last two weeks, my Akismet binspam has nearly quadrupled on average, some days even more than quadrupled. The odd thing about this is that I have not been posting very much (perhaps once a week) and can’t find any new & authoritative back links leading to me.

What the heck! Did someone tie a pork chop to my blog and forget to give it a head start before releasing the dogs? Yikes! Did I cross some kind of invisible line in longevity and posts? I don’t think so, my ranking on Technorati (and those like it) hasn’t changed much. I have a theory - I recently posted some remarks about Microsoft’s AI Santa bot that contained ‘oral sex’ in the title, it was in the Google top 10 for all kinds of funky search phrases for a few weeks.

All of the SPAM has been porn related, so it looks like the bot nets dug google for odd terms, found me, saw my page rank and added me to their list to pester.
I hope that Santa is good to Akismet this year, they’re going to need lots and lots and lots of servers in the not too distant future. I think its truly safe to concur with what others are saying, E-Mail SPAM is out, blog SPAM is the latest craze.

I own spamram.*, I may start compiling and publishing a BL _just_ for comment spamming IPs. It seems to me, the best defense (and help for Akismet) is that the comments never happen in the first place.

Data centers better start taking abuse complaints regarding comment SPAM more seriously, we’re trying to stop back links that push the ranking of malware infested sites (as well as complaining about the annoyance). It seems ironic that in order to do this, we have to become (almost) as irritating as the spammers themselves when dealing with abuse departments.
The point being, what you might not realize is that a majority of visitors that Google sends you are actually bots pretending to be Windows/Firefox users. Google remains the favorite tool for those who are tasked with feeding the botnets
    Best Regards,
    Tim

Can anyone point me towards any stats for the latest Search Engine Market Share?

One of the things I would love to know is who uses which search engines in the UK. For instance what % use googlee.com rather than google.co.uk?

  20. #20
    Same about 80% from google.

I believe Google has about 58.4% right now at least that's what analysts are reporting because of the Yahoo bid.

78% of our traffic is from Google. 20% from Yahoo and the rest is mixed.
