    UnitedHosting down?

I don't seem to be able to access their site or mine either. Anyone know what's up? All services including mail seem to be down.

Just an addenum: Their website is http://www.unitedhosting.co.uk. I believe their forums can be accessed at http://www.unitedforums.co.uk.

I cannot access both the above mentioned site, as well as my site or my email.

    Hi,

I think you must have caught the site/server on a http restart. We monitor with alertra (5 minute gaps) and didnt get an alert so the downtime must have been short lived.

    Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

I don't think that's the case here. ALL your sites as well as mine (and my email) were not accessible for the past few hours. Services have only JUST returned to normal. Many other users posted on your forums about this problem, which was prolonged. I flushed my DNS every few minutes to make sure i wasn't getting cached pages. The problem seems to be a DNS related one, as many other customers posted on your forums also.

I am disappointed in UH for not communicating information to it's users, and for attempting to censor opinions and comments.

To WHT: Please see the attached screenshot. You will notice that the two theads reporting the experienced server problems can no longer be accessed. Thanks to VB3, I managed to get the preview of the first thread shown on the screenshot.

I did reply to one of the threads, and someone else obviously did after me.

    Hello sanjiv,

derek has just replied to a thread you have subscribed to entitled - Server problems - 14th Feb 2004 - in the Customer Support forum of UnitedForums.co.uk.

The question is -- where are the threads now? Why is UH attempting to cover this up with a "httpd restart" excuse? The DNS issues isn't a local problem -- many of your clients around the globe experienced it.

I would appreciate a response on this, Matt. Feel free to correct me where i've faulted.

On my next post, I will post the source code to the thread entitled "DNS Problems" started by abarfield, which you see in the screenshot and no longer exists. Thankfully I still had my window open.

We arent hiding anything. You can contact us via email if you are still experiencing a problem.

Due to the number of tickets on this matter there was obviously a problem with a large number of our servers and we are investigating where and when this issue occured.

Forum threads about downtime and sites not working are removed as per our forum rules. Its not hiding anything, threads like that are unproductive and we we encourage you to communicate via email and tickets see:

    http://unitedforums.co.uk/vb/showthread.php?t=1528

The servers are all now up and functioning so please feel free to continue your dialog with us via the support system we have in place.

Apologies for any inconvenience this outtage must have caused for our customers, its a rare occurance and we will investigate the matter fully.

    Regards,
    Matt

Matt, you don't seem to understand -- during the prolonged outage, we couldn't access ANYTHING. No email, no helpdesk, no forum -- nothing. This applies to me, at least.

Of course the servers are functioning now; that's why I was able to access the forum. As soon as I accessed it, the 2 threads in question above already existed. What scares me is; why was there such a large outage for a prolonged period of time, without a known reason? It surprises me to know that such a thing could happen at the very first place. Now that it has happened, why did you claim that I caught the server on a httpd restart, even though I and many other mentioned that this outage was prolonged accross many servers (evidently)?

Services have resumed to normal operation now, but this doesn't cover the fact that something undesirable happened earlier on. Surely, UH needs to account to it's customers for it's actions?

FYI, I couldn't access even unitedhosting.co.uk during the outage. It seems very likely that the problems were DNS related, like what many others have proposed.

Every customer who emailed or sent in a ticket did get a response. There was downtime yes, and we solved the issue and responded to customers.

We dont use public forums such as WHT as a means of support, as I said above feel free to email us.

Thats all I really have to say here on WHT about the problem, please feel free to open a dialog with us directly and we do apologise for any inconvenience this must have caused you.

I have 3 different monitors and one (easymonitor) caught the issues. It looks like something ocurred at three time frames around 4.42 am CST, 5:58 am CST, and 6:58 am CST. If you look at their forum. You can see that there was a routine issue and it may not have affected all traffic.
